SANTO DOMINGO.-  Poultry farmers returned to the Chamber of Deputies to defend their position in the row pitting them against consumers over the price of chicken, affirming that it is “fair and proper.”

Meanwhile at least 21 community and consumer groups asked support  for today’s call "a day without eating chicken," to press retailers, butcher shops, supermarkets and convenience stores to cut the meat’s price.

Consumers say a pound of chicken at RD$45 and RD$55 is too high, whereas poultry producer Bolivar Cartagena reiterated in his visit to Congress that RD$29 per pound at the farm is fair and proper, noting that the problem is with the distribution chain, which in his view is very extended.

Whether it's the producers or distributors hiking up prices, should matter not. What's important is that along the line, some entity wants to milk the public for all it's got!

It's unfair to those that can least afford it, the very poor who must spend the greater part of their income on food.
This is the main reason for revolts and unrest. The govt should step in and figure out why chicken meat costs twice the amount it does in the US. Some greedy, heartless demons are trying to get rich screwing the public and should be prosecuted for fraud and conspiracy!
Jail the bastards and feed them bread and water. Let's see how they like it!

Fair and proper for whom? Not the consumers. A like to express that I like chicken, they were made to be eating, that's why God made them food. Anyway , is still too expensive. I just got back in June 27, price is correct of RD$45 to 55 ( $1.18 to $1.44) at the Sirena in Puerto Plata. . Incredible, the price for food now a days in the D.R. and I agree with RonAvane "some entity wants to milk the public for all it's got!" but that's true for almost all business there. A tourist will get charged more money for the same service and product at local stores. That's why they never have prices on the items they sell. Lack of competition, protection of markets, bureaucracy, theft, lack of proper conditions to prevent spoilage, high cost of transportation...fuel, conditions of roads and vehicles and last but not least, greed and corruption is what drives up the price for everything.

Truer words were never uttered, my friend. You said it best!
