Santo Domingo.- Nearly 170 years after Dominican Republic severed its chains of Haitian domination, a priest from country believes that his countrymen "should get down on its knees and apologize to the Dominican people for subjecting it to 22 years of regression."
The priest Francis Haver said he values ??the advances Dominican Republic has experienced compared to his nation of origin, and his country’s occupation of the Dominican nation "should’ve never materialized."
"In history I learned that the Haitians occupied the Dominican Republic for 22 years, now all Haitians should kneel and apologize to the Dominicans, because for 22 years the country was held back and that prevented the country from advancing more," said the priest, who claims to be Dominican though acknowledges that he can’t vote in elections.
The parish priest of the sector La Caleta, Boca Chica spoke in the presence of president Leonel Fernandez, during the blessing of two housing projects inaugurated b the head of state in the municipality of Guerra.
He praised Fernandez’s work, noting that Dominican Republic has experienced a breakthrough, thanks to the efforts of the current Head of State, and predicted his return to office very soon. "I know that the president is going but hopefully he’ll be back, not just for 12 years, we will see if he can last longer when he returns so that we are a stronger country."

I think you guys are totally mistaken. This act would bring attention to the little known FACT of that historical moment in time when Haiti was not the dilapidated and small time nation-state that it has come to represent in modern times. The Haiti of 1800-1842 was relatively speaking a powerful force in the Caribbean. It gave arms to independence struggles in latin America and sent her soldiers to distant lands to fight, to the Confederate States that would become the USA, among others.
It also decided to extend her powers towards consolidation and imperial control over the Spanish speaking part of the island. This inconvenient historical fact does not jive with the hapless state and nation that we have come to know as Haiti in modern times. But to ignore such facts betrays a proper understanding of the dynamics that govern the relationship between the two nation states on the island of Hispaniola.

STATUES TO HONOR HAITIAN SOLDIERS
Men fought against British
BY CINDY WONG
Miami Herald
June 2002
North Miami officials recently met with their Savannah, Ga., counterparts to begin a groundbreaking effort to commemorate Haitians involvement in the Revolutionary War.
About 750 Haitian freemen fought alongside colonial troops against the British in the Siege of Savannah on Oct. 9, 1779. The role of Haitian soldiers in the battle had long been ignored, North Miami Mayor Josaphat Celestin said."

"The U.S. was able to station about 6,000 soldiers to protect Charleston but lost Savannah in the fall of 1778 to the Brits while doing so.
The U.S. needed help. It would need naval forces to take back Savannah and the French had just entered the war as an ally to the U.S. before the end of 1778.
French Admiral Comte d'Estaing was in the Caribbean where he recruited 500 men, today known as Haitians. They were called the Chasseurs-Volontaires de Saint Domingue or the Volunteer Hunters of Saint Domingue who were free men descended from Africa.
These men fought alongside the French and U.S. forces delivering another defeat to British conquests in North America.
Many say that the experience of these 500 African soldiers in the "Siege of Savannah" help prepared them for positions as officers in the revolutionary armies of the Haitian Revolution.
Henri Christophe was said to have been among the 500.

British fought for years after to try to regain control of the young nation.
SAVANNAH, USA - When the French allied with the United States in 1778 to help defeat the British in the Revolutionary War, French Commander Comte d'Estaing was accompanied by 500 free men of color from Saint Domingue, present-day Haiti, who fought for U.S. independence.
Although the U.S. had declared its independence in 1776, it would not be easily earned as the British fought for years after to try to regain control of the young nation."

I disagree with this priest's proposal. The first two posters are right, why should today's Haitians be held accountable for the actions of their ancestors almost 200 years ago? I'm just being honest.
That's like hating every white american for things that occured in the US in the late 1700s. Today's whites had nothing to do with it, and it only serves to further perpetuate a certain social divide when things like these are brought up constantly.
Some people have accepted that the course of history cannot be changed and the past has already occurred. Some have acknowledged that and have moved on. Others need to do the same.

Much of the power of the church comes from making their flock feel guilty for what they didn't do. They claim we are all born "with original sin". That is what the Adam and Eve myth is about. If a baby dies without being baptized, it will not go to heaven, but will spend eternity in Limbo, because of Adam's sin of not remaining ignorant, and defying God's instruction not to "eat from the tree of knowledge". Guilt and ignorance - their stock in trade.

The same happened in Mexico when mostly all troops were recalled and the Gringos took advantage of the situation.Had the French held a strong contingent of troops the Gringos would
had never dared to take over Mexico
At that time the Haitians took advantage of the situation and send some to Bolivar and some to Mexico to fight the French. They were all fighting for a mutual cause except Bolivar was out for the weaopons & munitions that Haiti had as a catche and it was vital for their LA independence.

Should the US appologize to Mexico for invading its country:
"The Mexican–American War, also known as the First American Intervention, the Mexican War, or the U.S.–Mexican War, was an armed conflict between the United States of America and Mexico from 1846 to 1848 in the wake of the 1845 U.S. annexation of Texas, which Mexico considered part of its territory despite the 1836 Texas Revolution."
"The most important consequence of the war was the Mexican Cession, in which all the Mexican territories from California to southwestern Wyoming, west of Texas along the Rio Grande River and south of the 42nd parallel were ceded to the United States—almost 15 percent of the nation's total area."
Correct you are .In addition to that, the main thing were the vast amount of munition and French made weapons as one of the biggest arcenal in the Western Hemisphere left behind by the French with a small garrison upon being called back by Napoleon to fight in the Russian Front.
That is why Bolivar turned a blind eye to the entire situatin in DR in exchange for those badly needed weapons. The rest is history.
Napoleon was against all monarchies( England, Spain, Russia). The latter been the wose he went after. Had to fight the Brits in Egypt where his army not the Brits's found the Roseta Stone but the Brits took it away from Napolion as spoil of war upon losing to England the "sea battle of the nile".Nevertheless A French officer name Champolion" was the one to decipher the gerogrifics

A move in the right direction, one that can help mend many rifts between our two peoples. The Haitian state should apoligize for Dessalines' atrocities while they're at it.. after all he is considered the father of their nation. And I'm not certain that the Dominican government ever apoligized for the parsley massacre..if not then now is the time to throw such a proposal on the table. Much respect to Haver.

Trujillo did apologize and paid close to 1 Million USD as a "reparation" for his genocide, Balaguer was the one that negociated with the Haitian goverment...i will cerntaly accept an apology from the MASSACRE commited by Haitian Troops on 1805 on Moca and Santiago calles LOS DEGUELLOS, were thounsands were slaughtered just becase the color of their sking, JUST LIKE TRUJILLO DID...i hear NO ONE talking about that, seems the lives of those people don't count.
