Santo Domingo.- With five bars shuttered in the Colonial Zone on noise thus far, the locals who still to complain of disorder face a drawn out battle with the area’s sustained growth as a tourism attraction and its accompanying effects.

Some residents complain that bars and night clubs appear to be family homes in the daytime because they have no signs to identify them in front.

Next to the famous Duarte Park life for the residents has become hell on lost sleep, as the nightly ruckus of gays and lesbians led Las Mercedes church priest Santiago Bautista to call it "Sodom and Gomorrah."

He complained of immoral acts performed in plain sight, made even worse by the noise from inside the bars and outside by customers. "This is unbearable, I couldn’t sleep last night, I shut the doors, but it seems that they were playing drums and I don’t know why. It seems they do it on purpose to keep anyone from sleeping.”

He called the authorities “very permissive” because they’ve let the streets which were quiet and religious become Sodom with the homosexuals acts.

I'm so embarrassed because they to do their "stuff" there, leaning against a tree or on a bench, even if it’s in front of a church," said a resident who didn’t want her name used.

Progress

From a handful of bars and nightclubs and just two or three restaurants in the 1980s, the Colonial Zone boasts dozens of those businesses today, and a trend toward further development.

Since Lie-onel Fernandez is off spending our Tax Pesos with Margarita “The Mad Hatter” in Europe on another DO NOTHING Trip, I nominate Roy to mediate this dispute between the Church and the Merchants!

Unless there are 2 churches of las mercedes in ZC, Parque Duarte is no where near iglesia de las mercedes,,,and at any rate the worst you can see there is people drinking as they do in all parks ..the only difference is that they are mainly gay ...and far less noisy than the parks in other parts of the capital . Of the % bars that are shut , 3 that I know well cause no problems at all and are much much quieter than the colmados in ZC.
Santiago Bautista is not telling the truth and the police are targeting the wrong places.

What a bunch of douche bags. Anyone who lives in the ZC and complains about noise and traffic are the worst kind of self-absorbed scum.

Now about this A-Hole priest.

How would you like it if people complained about traffic and noise when they hold mass, wedding or funeral?

The Church is a business like any bar or club. They should follow the same rules and regulations and be Taxed as well.

That posting makes no sense at all ,,,Zc can be a wonderful place without the influx of Dominicans at night acting as total hoons ,,this is quite a recent problem ..and before the bars were smaller and the discos much less and better controlled

Why can't they just enfoce the laws that are written about public nudity and obscene oe lewd acts in public.

Peeing in public is illegal so how can live sex shows go unpunished..

I often walk down Calle Hostos to a home of a friend in A. Portes and there is nearly always a poilice van parked near Parque Duarte but they do nothing and you can see the young men crossing the street to piss on the church wall ,The small colmado in Duarte does a great trade in Presidente ..but apart from the peeing the people in the park are not noisy ..all that is needed is a public loo ,,,as is also needed in other parks

This sounds like a Witch Hunt to get rid of GAYS ONLY. I lived in the zona colonial for 5 years and the noises bar's to me were, the so call streight disco bar's, but the noise did not bother me because I knew I was living in the Touris Zone. There are lots of Tourist that hang out in CZ,and they should have the right to do so, after all it is a Tourist Area MEANING MANY BARS, HOTELS AND RESTAURANTS.

If you run everyone out of the Zona Colonial the city will lose lots of money. Traveling Tourist and many Dominicans that work in the Hotels and Restaurants Industry will loss their jobs.

(("Sodom and Gomorrah."

He (Santiago Bautista) complained of immoral acts performed in plain sight))

After God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, and turned Lott's wife into some salt statue, Lott's daughters got their own father drunk and had sex with him. And, God did not complain of such immoral act in his sight.

I just hope some Las Mercedes church priests did not have some KY Jelly ready to use on some choir boys...
