Santo Domingo.– A Dominican court sentenced a man and woman to 30 years in prison for killing a Belgian retiree who had moved to the country.

According to prosecutors, it was the maximum potential sentence for Johanna Cristal Aquino, 22, and Jesus Maria Jaquez Tejada, 34. The prosecutor's office said in a statement after the sentencing that the couple killed Luc Vandormael, 58, in October 2010 as part of a robbery scheme.

Authorities said Aquino lured the Belgian to an apartment in north Santo Domingo where she and her companion gave him tea laced with a drug that knocked him out. Then they killed and dismembered Vandormael. A third person was acquitted in the case.

30 years is not sufficient for the crime.

Problem is...they will spend 30 years amongst people who see nothing wrong in what they did. Chances are as well...living conditions are on par with what they left behind.
I say...why not invite them up for tea????

Unfortunately safety in this country has gone down the tubes in the last eighteen months. Almost everyone I know living here has been held up or home robbed including myself. Hopefully the politicians will catch on and improve policing before all us expats move out and tourism is ruined.

I would support the death penalty in the D.R. if they had a professional and impartial justice system. They do not. Next thing you know people would be getting accused of murder for some political vengeance. Not good. Let them rot in jail. Force them to work. Make them repair the holes in the roads, cut the overgrown weeds in the sides of the roads. Use 15 murderers to pull a plow and plant food.

I agree elanonimo, death penalty for murderers as well as robbers who commit assault in the course of their misdeeds. I used to proudly say that my compatriots treated visitors to the island with Taino like kindness. That we didn't have the problems other tourist destinations had with thieves and crime.
This tropical paradise started to change when the Dominican - Yorks thugs began being deported back to the island. Now with resources and jobs more scarce with the Haitian invsions more people are getting and acting desperate, though the Haitian presence should not be an excuse for lack of morality.

He was not careful enough. I think that this story is a warning for those foreigners who want to live in the D.R. and have young girlfriends. some people loose their perspective. So a 50 some year old man gets "involved romantically" with a 22 year old? Hummmmm. Not good. Once a foreigner steps onto the D.R. they must know they are a target for delinquents, for scams, theft, murder. Hive this warning. Never trust anyone. That cuero turned out to be very expensive indeed. My condolences to his friends and family.

She was his girlfriend for some months. As soon as she found out the relationship is most likely over, because of her (played) jealousy they planned to rob and kill him.
Hope this will help, as I said before, he was my friend.

This country has no more future if they keep on doing being corrupt, sucking out the european and american, squeeze out the dollars of them, and they think they can go on with that ? No, this country will be at the end within 2 years. European Travelers already have been warned for the increasing corruption and violation and criminality, and these people want to sell their appartments our houses to expats ???? No way , they wont do it, because they have been warned already, All these stupid people will end up with ruines , no buyer, real estate will be finished. And they don`t realize they need people like us. No tourism, no investors, they are GONE ! And I am very mad because I am belgian to, living here in this country, being robbed, used, treatened, everything you can imagine, and the corrupt leaders keep on doing whatever they want.....This man DID NOT DESERVE TO DIE because he had a young girlfriend, they just USED him !!!
