Santo Domingo.- Consumer Protection Agency (Proconsumidor) director Altagracia Paulino on disclosed a study Tuesday which found 97% of salamis produced in the country lack the required nutrients and contain 51% excess chemicals which she affirms threaten consumers’ health.

She said 15% of the products analyzed contained fecal coliforms, "for which it violates the provisions on Dominican salami, which this agency stipulates its absence in any food, as it poses a serious risk to consumer health."

In press conference, the official said the study showed that 12% of the salamis have high yeast content. "And as for sodium nitrite, it found that 51% of the samples showed results above the limit of 200mg/kg allowed in Health Regulations.

I thought this was a consumer protection agency, how about naming the brands involved in the practice of offsetting the weight of the salami with turds. Are we not to eat any of the salami's available on the island, because the 15%.

In response to the questions of journalists the Director of Pro Consumer, Altagracia Paulino, did not say what brands of salamis had the worst conditions for consumption and which had the best.

She would only say she had met with representatives of the salami manufactures, who pledged to improve their products.

The question to ask is what is the source of this fecal coliforms ? It is likely that perhaps the water used to process the meats comes from the local municipal water supply, notorious and known for its poor quality and the reason most Dominican families use filtering systems or purchase bottled water as a preventative measure against contamination.

Nevertheless, I know the moment the word FECES comes into play it is an immediate cause for alarm. However, the presence of fecal coliforms in water may not be directly harmful, and does not necessarily indicate the presence of feces.

I will have to disagree with that. Have you ever seen the show on the "The Food Network" with Andrew Zimmer ?

He travels all over the world exploring eating habits of many cultures and there is no comparison. You see the difference between others and Dominicans, is that a small percentage may perhaps consume meat products unaware it is contaminated or know the reality of its actual content. It is not because "cacalami" is considered to be a delicacy like many cultures, who eat odd and strange foods and have accepted the traditions as a normal every day staple. The people are very aware of what is it that they are consuming.

Nevertheless, lo que no mata engorda..............

Same as i could spot any Cuban upon opening their mouth as well as a Puerto Rican & Central

American, as well as a Mexicans,Spaniards or( Chileans,Argentineans,Uruguayans) last three

speak alike with a more pronouced Italian accent among he Argentinians.

@MrTAR-LOL...........Yes, good that you picked up on my post. I guess I said something without giving it much thought and you are absolutely correct. Cacalami is perfect for people who love to eat shxxxt and I think of a better, more perfect place as export market for Dominican Salami.
