Santo Domingo.- The flap over Consumer Protection Agency’s (Pro Consumidor) finding that as high as 15% of the salamis sold in the country are tainted with fecal coliform bacteria has again unleashed public squabbling among government agencies, and reveals a lack of mettle in president Leonel Fernandez’s Administration to muzzle its officials.
Public Health minister Bautista Rojas on Wednesday rebuked Pro Consumidor’s attitude in revealing the finding on salamis without first informing them, despite Fernandez’s statement supporing the efforts by that agency’s director Altagracia Paulino.
Also on the defensive Wednesday was Standards and Quality Systems (Digenor) director Manuel Guerrero, ruled out the study into alleged impurities found in 22 brands of salami, noting that the procedure utilized was incorrect.
He said the report has inflicted serious harm on companies which in his view have effective quality control and comply with the standards required, especially for export. “When a factory is to be inspected one cannot go to the place of sale instead of the factory, because the issue of samples is a scientific procedure.”

Well, NO.....nationality is irrevelent.
What we need are natives with values and principles who have a sincere interest in the well being of the country, not self-serving individuals who just care about themselves and their own. The way to overcome these barriers is through the institutionalization of gov't, not foreigners who would likely also take advantage of the situation and in the end just make things worse.
We can see evidence by the dire circumstances found in the neighboring country of Haiti. Int'l organizations, outside agencies and foreign govt have all come in to help save Haiti, meddle in Haitian affairs only to find Haiti is worse off now then when first started.
So definitely not, we don't need or want non-Dominicans, we only want the best and brightest to do the best job possible for the benefit of the people

I disagree with Gmiller statement that the only way that we can get out of 4th world country is to be run by non Dominican.The fact that we have the biggest economy in central America and the Caribbean and we triple our GDP in the last 8 years, according to the US department of the state prove that you are VERY wrong!

Because the excellent performance, sends a wrong message which supports a Machiavelian principle, "the ends justify the means." This quote by Machiavelli is interpreted as if anything can be done no matter what the consequences may be for the end result will be justified, the method used to attain it is of no consequence. Leonel the Lion certainly proved that. Machiavelli also coincidentally said, "The prince must be the lion, but he must also know how to play the fox."
And Leo Fdz played the role of Lion, Fox and Tiguere....This is not what we want future generations to follow, because in the end it will always come to bite you in the butt.

Yes, I have always wondered how you can govern a country by remote control.....even the stooges need some guidance.....it reminds me how the elite Russians, pre-revolution, spoke French to one another.....as they looked down upon their own culture. It is my view that the young (under age 30) in the Dom Rep are more capable of running the country than anyone over the age of 40.....forget about occupying Wall Street, occupy the 27th de Fev. !!!

A country can run very well if it has a very good civil service but the DR does not ,but in this story there are some people with their noses very much out of joint because a Consumer protection Agency has actually got off its but and done something that the lazy bastards in Public Health have not . The govrenment departments are not of a high standard

True story:
A freind of mine was driving on the main street of my small city several years ago, when he was stopped for passing a red light....that had quickly changed from green to red....it was one of those fast change lights that the local police knew about so it was like shooting fish in a bowl for the local traffic cops....well, his brother-in-law, from the DR was in the passenger seat and piped up, "don't worry, I have this one, and reached for his wallet"...at which point, my friend said, "what? are you crazy we'll both go to jail here for that"...
This is the difference. The only difference between or among the nations south of the USA is the level of morality of the officials at all levels....our corruption is just not as blatant...we have it, alright, but it is hidden or at higher levels....but if you peel back a few layers, you can always find it.....faked civil service exam scores, phony appointments to posts, etc etc...but you just can't pay for a traffic ticket!!!
