The massive entrace to the Armed Forces Ministry...Corruption or simple extravagance? Photo by acento.com.do, thorugh desdelarepublicadominicana.blogspot.com
Santo Domingo.- The head of the Justice Ministry’s Anticorruption Dept. (DPCA) on Friday revealed that an investigation has been launched into an alleged embezzlement of RD$15.0 billion (US$384 million) in the Armed Forces, but didn’t specify in which branch of the military an audit detected the irregularity.
Hotoniel Bonilla also revealed that the case against former Agrarian Institute director Hector Rodriguez Pimentel is based on an Accounts Chamber audit which allegedly found an embezzlement of RD $2.0 billion and a second audit by the controller General with alleged irregularities of US$56 million.
The official said yet another audit by the Engineers and Architects Guild (Codia) found other irregularities in two public works, but didn’t specify an amount.
Bonilla, who has dubbed Rodriguez Pimentel a “pathologically corrupt official,” added that he doesn’t feel satisfied with the few convictions his department has obtained in the courts. “That would be possible if we had a system of justice which responded to society but unfortunately that isn’t so.”

This is not petty corruption. These are big numbers! The PLD may have grown the economy over the last eight years, but the scale of corruption seems to have grown even more.

All the more reason to trim down the forces and especially the numbers at the top of the military branches. Border control and marine forces with a small efficient air-force is more than enough to meet the needs of society. DR isn't going to be fighting any wars.

Atabey,
Yes, especially because the main justification for the DR having a military (on top of a coast guard and police agency) is to protect against an invasion by Haiti.
So it's ironic that most of the Haitians who enter the country illegally do so because they or their Dominican smugglers are able to pay bribes to the Army to let them through.

We don't need probes we need prosecutions. Money stolen from the common purse should be returned and all assets up to three times the values of that stolen should be confiscated from the individual or if they don't seem to have it from their families. People know when a relative is living beyond their means. Let the family that shares the plunder together go poor together. The three times amount is so that some minor irregularity cannot be used as an excuse to ruin someone targeted by opponents.

DR is run by MAFFIA ,so call MILITARY. To what extent are they military w/o trainning.Who are they
going to fight,Haiti? They don't have to fight Haiti if that is what worries the DR .Haiti is already in DR by peacefull means. I would say most of the money has gone to the Airforce (Ranfis's Elite).
