Santo Domingo.– The Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (Funglode) announced the publication of Carl Allen's "El Metro and the
Impacts of Transport System Integration in Santo Domingo,
Dominican Republic."
The study is an evaluation of the potential
impact of the transport system on poverty alleviation, congestion,
pollution reduction and social and economic development.
The outcome
of Allen's research is this extensive report on the effects of the metro
and feeder bus routes on the nation's urban development, which includes
recommendations for maximizing societal benefits.
As a Funglode fellow, Allen spent the summer of 2009 and January
2010 carrying out the research under the guidance of his National Academic
Advisor and Transport Reform Office (Opret) Assistant director Leonel Carrasco.

He said that prior to Leonel Fernandez being President of the Republic, in 1995, Leonel said that administrative corruption cost the Dominican state some 35 billion pesos per year, and now he is permissive and flexible towards corrupt officials.
Rosa Tiburcio regretted that President Fernandez, in his 12 years of Government, has not faced the crime of corruption.

But Hernandez feels Dominicans do not pay enough taxes. He proposes more taxes for the farm sectors, free zones and mining sectors.

During the international workshop "Experiences of the Control Progress in Tax Administrations of the Region," sponsored by the Department of Taxes (DGII) on occasion of its 15th anniversary, DGII director Juan Hernandez said that the department has increased revenues, going from RD$60 billion in 2004, at the start of the eight-year administration of President Fernandez, to RD$248 billion in 2011, for a 313% growth.
But Hernandez feels Dominicans do not pay enough taxes. He proposes more taxes for the farm sectors, free zones and mining sectors.
