Santiago. -Pain and despair reigned over yesterday’s wake for two of the six people who burned to death after their vehicle collided into a power line post.

Services for Mia de los Angeles, 7, and her grandmother Romelinda Espinal were held yesterday at the Blandino Funeral home, while those of Victor, Carmen, Doris and Alba Espinal occurred in Jaibón, Laguna Salada.  Their domestic worker, whose name wasn’t provided, was buried in Cotuí.

Four of the dead lived in New York and New Jersey and were visiting relatives in Santiago.

The authorities have yet to provide clues as to led to the accident, which thus far has been blamed on mechanical failure.

Simple....high speeds and not obeying the rules of the road is the root cause of this accident and many others in the DR.

How many more tragedy's like this will happen before people in the DR realize your life and the life of others are at the controls of the car one drives.

My heart felt condolences to all the victims and their families.

@ mr. Know it all Riosm,

You should re-read the artical before you start blabing your mouth.

" The authorities have yet to provide clues as to led to the accident, which thus far has been blamed on mechanical failure."

So mr. BIG MOUTH...... It most likely was mechanical failure and not as you state it.....

" Simple....high speeds and not obeying the rules of the road is the root cause of this accident and many others in the DR."

Your right I don't know it all. "Mechanical failure"....faulty brakes, leaking gas line, leaking propane tank, weather, falling power lines on the car ?

As one who has driven many many times in the DR speeding and disregard for the rules of the road is and will always be the number one factor in auto accident fatality's.

The facts written in this article one using common sense can only assume what caused this terrible accident.

"Colliding into a power line" that alone sounds like the car was travelling at a unsafe speed probably losing control then striking the power pole. But then again in your logic way of thinking .......the pole was travelling which stuck the car.

Hitting a fixed stationary power pole ?

riosm - you are right on!!!

These Donkey Riders don't understand the laws of physics. Therefore, they believe because they are going 10 MPH in a clunker nothing will happen when they step on the brakes if any...

Here in DR no one follows the laws as to keeping vehicles safe. There are cars falling apart riding our streets, and those that look new are not properly maintained since there's not an institution that forces car owners to properly inspect them and what not!!

So when an accident like this happens is because of what I mentioned above. It's either a car that looks new, however rotten inside or really rotten altogether. Once a vehicle is on march/moving it turns into a big powerful mass. Therefore, whatever stands in the way will pay the consequences. Even if the car is doing 5 MPH the energy transfered is tremendous so imagine going beyond it.

Based on what I see it looks like the driver was speeding, hit the pole - everyone got impaired, car caught on fire..

Cont.....

and there you see the consequences. So please it does not take a lot of thinking to realize what was the case here...

So riosm, I agree with you. This guys was speeding. Otherwise, they all could have made it out ALIVE!!

Regards of what was the reason, driver error, bad mechanics, both, neither. I hope this tragic event does more than just become a passing news story. People REALLY need to take traveling more seriously in the Dominican Republic, and really everywhere. If its not texting and driving its drinking and driving. The Government needs to seriously start enforcing the traffic laws. Otherwise how can you expect people to respect other laws if the Government is encouraging a culture that thinks EVERY law has a bending or breaking point. No wonder corruption is such an issue. My condolences to the family, and may God remember them.

I know the family personally and NO she was not speeding and YES they were wearing seatbelts. If you must know the car experienced mechanical failure.
Please stop stereotyping people, it makes you all sound so ignorant.

My personal apologies to you and the Families.

Sad but true many auto accident fatalities in the DR can be preventable.
