Santo Domingo.- Business sectors demand a new study on the quality of locally produced salamis, in the wake of Haiti’s suspension of their imports, "because of the mishandled ProConsumidor (Consumer Protection Agency) report."
The retailers and business leaders grouped in Fenacerd and the Herrera Industries Association (AEIH) warn the scandal could devastate the country’s meat industry and threatens the jobs of hundreds of workers.
"A new study would bring tranquility to the population and establish sanctions against firms that do not meet established safety levels," said Fenacerd president Ricardo Rosario, quoted by eldiac.om.do.
Cardinal weighs in
Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez and Wadi Cano, president of the business leaders grouped in the AEIH urged disclosure of the brand names of the salamis in question and avert generalizing which in their view harms those companies which meet the standards .

A poorly handled situation. The offending goods should have been pulled from the market. This would have provided some public assurance that health checks were being monitored. And if its true that the adulterated goods numbered 15% of the salami market, then the hardship to all merchants could have been lessen.

I don't eat these processed meat products period. A friend of mine who is currently in the food business told me once that processed meats in the D.R. have (8) EIGHT times the legal amount of sulphates and nitrates as permitted in the U.S. That's GLOW in the dark quantity.
It's probably permitted by the govt. due to the lack of electricity in this dark and mysterious environment.
