San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic.- Former Major League star pitcher Jose Rijo was the front man for alleged drug trafficker Matias Avelino Castro (Joaquin Espinal Almeyda), and had in his name 80% of the assets owned by the now fugitive, according to the prosecutors who investigate the murder of the journalist Jose Agustin Silvestre.

Lead prosecutor German Miranda said the indictment results from the evidence against the former Cincinnati Reds all-star in the money laundering case which has eight defendants.

Avelino Castro, the network’s alleged ringleader charged with ordering the murder of the journalist Jose Silvestre, is still at large.

The defendants are Ángel Amed Gutiérrez, Elvin Canario D’Óleo (Haina), Fermín Marcelino Calderón, Dennis Junior Serrano (Presión) and Franklin Lugo Mejía (La Máquina ), being held pending the start of the trial, while Raysa Danielis Avelino was released on RD$1 million bond with travel restriction, in addition to Rijo.

Of the accused, Rijo, Marcelino Calderón and the fugitive Avelino Castro are charged with money laundering.

The alleged kingpin also faces charges conspiracy and murder, while the others are accused of conspiracy, weapons possession, kidnapping and murder.

RD$20.0 million bond

Prosecutor Pamela Rijo requested bond to be set at RD$20 million, travel restriction and periodic appearance at the office of the prosecutor at the end of each month.

She said the date of the hearing for Rijo’s arraignment had yet to be set.

You have to wonder about this. What makes a guy who has made a name for himself, played great ball, appeared on all star teams, earned himself a MVP, and received The Tony Conigliaro Award happen to bring himself into this turn of events ?

Any hope of his entering the Hall of Fame have been dashed.

Drugs !!!!!!!!

The defendant is Jose Rijo and the prosecutor is Pamela Rijo , a strange coincidence and we have heard not a word from the lawyers from the defence ..and yet Pamela is outlining her case outside the court and even before the date of the court hearing has been set .
And the case has been moved from la Romana to San Pedro ..
From this report , it is almosy impossible to understand what is happening and how can you have a murder case being run with a money laundering case ,,,the evidence to be presented to the court would be entirely different .Or maybe evidence is not that important

Juan Marichal's daughter divorced him for 70% of his wealth.... That and some "bad business" (Josean) choices, bankrupted him....

Next step was to use his "name" to represent bad money as good money!

Eh duro!

DR justice is a haven for delays, postponements, lengthy appeals to different courts, then after about 7 years, appeal to the supreme court because of some technicality. By that time the accuser's as well as the defendants are worn out, and they will be lured by promises of monies and drop the charges.
Dominican justice is very lenient on baseball celebrities and consider them above the law, so the chances of Mr.Rijo doing real time, are slim and none, and his lawyers, some judges and prosecutor's allowing plea bargains, will make lot's of moola.

Yes , generoso , you are correct ..I have recently spent 6 days in el palacio de justicia trying to have a case resolved.. ,there has never been a building more ineptly named .
In this particular case , I noted the date for the hearing has not been set . and goodness knows when it will or where. The main reason for all the problems, in my opinion , is simply the failure of the prosecutors to produce the correct evidence , and then the failure of the defence lawyers to test thoroughly the strength of the evidence .
Some days in the courts , the same prosecutor presents cases against people in up to 9 different cases but he or she has very little knowledge of any case ..it is absurd ...And as you point out , the lawyers try to get around the court system by agreeing on a sentance between themselves ..with a good cut going to them.

Only the few elite businessmen that have the government by the balls, can survive in the chaos of the DR justice system. There is no justice, and zero protection for anyone's investment from mercenary lawyers and their official judicial accomplices, and you meekly operate with a target on your back.
The DR politicians do not understand that in order for us to advance as a nation, this rosary of injustices in the system, have to be curtailed, otherwise foreign investment will never have a strong presence.
Many friends and associates doing business in DR have left for good, and swore never to return, and I don't blame them a bit.
