NEW YORK.- The New York State Supreme Court’s authorization for the lawyers of Dominican-American state senator Adriano Espaillat to expand their arguments on alleged irregularities in the Democratic primary in which Congressman Charles Rangel was declared the winner paves the way for a new election between the two contenders.
The Board of Elections declared Rangel the winner of the balloting on June 26 when Espaillat conceded to his opponent, but days later his team said it had uncovered irregularities and violations of voters’ rights that affected the outcome, challenging and questioning the proceedings before the Board that started a recount which will conclude Thursday.
After the recount the difference was just 802 votes and Espaillat believes that after all the ballots are counted, including absentee voters and those who had to cast ballots via sworn statements for not figuring in their polling places, the Dominican could be declared the official winner of the primaries.
Nonetheless Espaillat and his lawyers have taken further steps and went to the N.Y. Supreme Court Monday morning where he filed suit and put the electoral standoff in the hands of a Justice.
Rangel holds one of the longest tenures in the U.S. Congress.

Rangel is one of the most corrupt and inept politicians in the US.
How his loyal constituents keep voting into office is an indictment against them as well.
He is a disgrace who I am sure rigged the election.
A leading Democratic piece of garbage.

I suspect there will be a lot of dirty laundry exposed in this mess. The big question will be why the Board of Elections was so quick to declare Rangel the winner, especially when paper voting tallys in NYC creates doubt about counting votes by hand. The rest of the state uses a vote scanning system.
From: United States
walnut excoriates the morals of Rangel, and is quizzical of his recurrent re-election. well, walnut, there are two matters to be considered here. firstly, most politicians are as corrupt as he is. secondly, maybe , as corrupt as he is, his constituents see him as having delivered the goods for his constituency, unlike some, who do absolutely nothing. hopefully, this gets resolved amicably, and does not develop into a full blown rift between the African American community, who are very loyal to Rangel, and the Dominican community.

The Dominicans here that wanted to vote but could not are complaining. They never registered to vote! They also complained the people at the polls did not know Spanish. This is America they should know English. This is the problem with migrants from Latin America and the Caribbean. They want American benefits and freedoms but they refuse to learn the language and assimilate.
The good thing is the remaining blacks and puerto ricans will come out in force to deny this Dominican access to launder money for the PLD. Puerto ricans already know what happens when you have too many Dominicans in your area. Piña carts, trash in the streets, public urination, white styrofoam cups everywhere.

The worst part is that if there was any voter fraud it was probably caused by the Espaillat people.
The fact is that now it is hard for a sitting politician to commit fraud. It is much easier for a challenger. Just look at the last presidential election with the massive fraud committed by the Obama campaign.

Nyguy what in the world does what " Puerto Ricans know what happens when you have too many Dominicans in one area" have to do with the contents of this article? That is as racist and stereotypical comment as I ever heard. It seems you just want to add a little dig at Dominicans. Are you Haitian? If you are it proves that like many of countrymen you are quiacist. Something Haityians hypocritically accuse Dominicans of being.
And just to punch a hole in your statement, because of the large migration of Dominicans to Philadelpia in Puerto Rican populated areas which were burnt out, abandoned, and full of litter, are now well kept, with thriving Dominican owned businesses. These Dominican immigrants opened over 500 businesses from 1990- 1995 and economically revitilized a formerly depressed North Philadelphia.

People driving over medians to access on ramps to bridges. Dominican politicians allow that to happen. We don't need the same type of anarchy in Harlem. Puerto Ricans know because in PR the dumb in a cans, as the Ricans call them, arrive causing crime with their drugs, perform menial task and treat the streets like garbage cans. Just like your Haitians they overcrowd housing and have multiple babies to get public assistance. Always trying to scheme to steal from hard working people. Now they want to represent Harlem? I witnessed your may 20 election with the PLD sitting outside the polling places with laptops checking to see if the guy they paid voted for them. We don't need or want that type of "democracy" here.

That last line cracked me up. " They need to learn English not just medicaid, foodstamps and wic". Very funny. However you can apply that mentality to many ethnic groups including blacks, PR's, Mexicans Americans, and since moving out of NYC I've seen many whites with that mentality. Its not only Dominicans nor is it the majority of us. That's all I want you to understand. If it was a majority how did all these Dominican owned business and professionals like myself make headway?
When Dominicans first immigratred here it was the Puerto Ricans and Black Americans that were on welfare and at that time were not owners of businesses. Many businesses in Harlem were owned by
And operated by whites. Try to look at a group for both their good not just their bad, for all ethnic groups have had their share of both. Just look at the Italians.

enough self pity for one day. one problem some guys here have is that they do not do their research, and talk out of their asses. they offend other ethnicities with falsehoods, which oftentimes come back to bite them. look at the assertion that blacks and Puerto Ricans are the biggest recipients of welfare. that is a falsehood. it is anecdotal rubbish. it does not help when the accuser is, in reality, a part of the ethnic group which really does get the most welfare.

Amazing how much ignorant, racist and biased opinions are posted here. Espaillat is doing nothing more than what is his constitutional right to do. I'm sure the Rangel camp would be doing the same thing if it was them in Espaillat's shoes. History shows those in power don't want to cede it and those trying to take it have obstacles to overcome. Why is everyone surprised? Let the process come to its conclusion and get to the bottom of everything, if possible. Finally, a few points to address: whites far outnumber any group in receiving public asistance. The language barrier is common to all iimmigrants in the last 25 years where focus to provide more access to them has increased in the States. Where are the outcries about other foreign language ballots? The rift between the dominican and african american communities is not exclusive; there are rifts between any up and coming demographic and the establishment. Lastly, can't we all get along? lol. At end of day, enjoy democracy.
