Santo Domingo.- The northern  Cibao region’s leading poultry producers Wednesday questioned the role played by Consumer Protection Agency director Altagracia Paulino, who would call a "one day without chicken" boycott on the meat’s high price.

But the row escalated further when the grocery stores and vendors grouped in the FENACERD agreed with Paulino, and would take part in the boycott, as chicken reached a record RD$54.50 (US$1.40) per pound.

Poultry sector leaders Eric Rivero, Wilfredo Cabrera and Ambiorix Cabrera visited the Chamber of Deputies Agriculture Committee today, to explain the meat’s production costs.

They said a pound of chicken costs RD $ 25.50 to produce and farms sell it for RD$29.00; frozen at RD$40.00 and fresh at RD $ 43.00, but they don’t regulate prices from intermediaries, such as supermarkets.

The business leaders said if the government wants to authorize chicken imports “so be it,” but it would still have to sell at RD$54.50 per pound.

Rivero said they’re earning less than 10% and confirmed they don’t control intermediaries’ prices, adding that Paulino’s boycott threat aims jeopardizes local farmers.

You mean other than leading the resistance against Trujillo, electing the first truly Democratically elect president Juan Bosch and creating the embryonic democratic environment so the PRSC and the PLD along with all the other alphabet soup of political parties could be formed!

"The issue is with the growers!"

He is right!

Everybody know that they cut the number of acres they planted chickens last fall just to raise the price.

The price on everything we eat, wear or ride in, has a direct correlation with the price of energy.
In this case, chicken feed is good part of the expense. Along with transport, processing and in some cases, refrigeration. All needing energy, in one form or another.

When energy is obtained cheaply, the final product's cost becomes cheaper... I don't know what producers pay for their energy, but if the cost of a gallon of regular gas, >$5.00US, is any indication of prevailing costs, then $1.40 a pound is probably justified.

Please , explain me why Danilo has anything to do with the price of chicken...
Is danilo a chicken producer?

Yes blar blar blar Hippo was a piece of cr&^p leader....
And now it's 8 years later.... move on... time to live in the now and face the problems not addressed by this government...

Ron, your right, we don't know all the numbers of costs and profits, local/imported feed, price of energy needed/consumed etc... So it is just "speculation" on the reasons, be it profit fixing, deliberate under production, over pricing costing, we just don't have all the information...

No. Many organic products are produced without energy input. Apart from the suns rays on the compost heap that transforms waste to valuable manure for crops.

Re-cycling is everything for a sustainable economy. An elite class is now dictating that everything should be fossil fuel based. They must be resisted and the fight contiuned. Industrial nations are planing for sustainability and results are becoming apparent. Cities like London are embracing urban agriculture and green policies are gaining huge support Worldwide.

There is a lag in becoming organic here but more importantly is to be sustainable, lower all amounts of things needed to produce, feed and fuel/energy, not the way industrial farming is currently run now, where a farmer grows just one product and goes to the shop to buy everything else..
I'm a big advocated of eat local, eat seasonal and sickens me to know the huge distances food travels to be placed in shops..

Name calling and insult are one thing and part and parcel of this site but making the assumption that any person was sexually abused by a family member, no matter who it's aimed at, is crossing far beyond the line of decency and civil behavior ....

More people will keep chickens in their yards. And rabbits, pigs etc. Fresh chicken!
Spare land and the roofs of houses can grow peas and soya for feed . The new tropical soya breeds give beans with very high protein content. The beans themselves also are a nutritious food.
Of course in some areas this already takes place but initiatives could take place in others through schools giving pupils experience.
