Santo Domingo.- Just one day after Justice minister Radhames Jimenez admitted defeat in the fight against femicides, a prominent political scientist affirms that disarming the population would help sharply reduce the most violent of deaths, where both the victim and perpetrator had weapons .

Daniel Pou called “alarming” the number of people who die from gunshots every day.  "We must implement a policy of disarmament ... There’s quite a direct link between the use of weapons and the increase in violence."

He said guns are used in 64% of Dominican Republic’s violent deaths.

In that regard the psychologist Luis Berges said the link between firearms and violence is growing. "When a firearm is present, the person who has it thinks they’re more empowered, which then heightens the perception of dominance and submission over the other person.”

Mix guns with illiteracy and poverty= disaster.

Of course this problem stems from poor policing in DR. Get a handle on the quality of policing and ALSO implement disarming the population. Both can and should be done ASAP.

Disarm the population. With only strong documented licences for a few business owners allowed.

The tradition of owning guns has gained enormous traction in DR, so this disarmament policy will be very hard to accomplish. If it's not accomplished, DR will see its rates of murder and violent crime continue to increase. Look at Venezuela or Jamaica, no way DR wants to be like that!

They are saying the only people that should have guns are the military, police and the crooks. Take them away from law obeying people. These are the only people who will admit having guns and they are easy because they applied for a permit to have one to protect themselves from the crooks. In the future they might have to fight for freedom.

The criminals will never relinquish their side arms. How would the citizens protect themselves against the criminals with guns ? or prevent a cat-burglar from making you watch your wife get violated and your kids sodomized....... Not everyone on this island has a government paid armed guard sitting in front of their house..

It would be a stupid Idea when 90% of the 64% killed by gun toting criminals are involved in the dominican drug trade...

I think the ones pushing "Disarmament" should be investigated as well as their associates, anyone living in DR should understand the lawlessness of the Republic and understands how detrimental it is to own a fire arm if afforded.

Something must be going down!!!! And, they knows it.

The increase in the use of firearms is due to the increase in crimes. It is a simplistic solution to blame firearms, for the current state of chaos in the island. The intentions of those that aspire for a police state, are to disarm the law abiding citizens. Guns don't kill people, people kill people.
It would be the same reasoning to ban automobiles because they cause accidental deaths.
In places like Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, the state has prohibited citizens from owning guns, and now only the ruffians in power there have them.

You do know that in Switzerland every able-bodied, adult male till the age of 30 is issued a take home assault rifle and after that they can keep the weapon once the government removes its selective fire capability?

Don't you hate it when all your anti-gun arguments run into a fact that proves them all wrong?

I can see no reason for so many shotguns being displayed . i have been toying with the idea of obtaining a licence to have a pistol simply because I am very nerrvous in my car sometimes when driving at night ,,and also I have had robbers in my home . But I am worried about killing or seriously hurting someone even if I am simply defending myself ,,,because the law is so variable .. I was in la Palacia de Justicia when there was a case of 3 robbers who entered a cafe de internet and demanded money with knives . The owner shot one dead and the other 2 were court and the owner only avoided prison because he did not press charges against the other 2 ..It really is unpredictable justice

DISARMAMENT if implemented will be a disaster.

the statists, fascists, and communists are at it again. For a country of its population size and development, DR 's crime rate is relatively low.

If DISARMAMENT occurs the crime rate will explode. Where there is strict gun control the only people who have them are criminals (who disobey the law anyway), and government. These two groups tend to be the biggest perpetrators of crime against the citizens.

Where there is access to guns, the worst of the criminals behave themselves because they understand that at any point and time then can have their heads blown off if they pick the wrong victim. Furthermore, government itself learns to stick to the easy picking of fleecing the populace rather than truly infringing against their personal liberties

This "Disarm the populace" movement is being pushed on to the DR by outsiders - just like the
"Violencia contra la Mujer" movement, the "GAY RIGHTS" mov

UK has few guns and crime rate is good. Even policemen do not normally carry guns.

DR has very high intentional homicide rate. 32 per 100,00 compared with UK,s 1.23. US with more guns than UK is at 4.8.

Figures from Wllkipedia. Fewer guns could lead to fewer intentional homicides. Long barrel rifles or
shotguns kept within the home or gun clubs are less of a problem than handguns.

Guns should be restricted to responsible crime free members of the community who can show a need. For someone else possession or carrying should result in a jail term.

Of course those who support guns would probably like a safe place to deposit their weapons on entry to a nightclub, restaurant, school or office.

"how many crimes have been inflicted with those military rifles?"

Few if any.

Which only proves that access to firearms is NOT A CAUSE OF VIOLENT CRIME.

In fact with the more states implementing legal concealed carry laws and its corresponding drop in violent crime in those very same states the numbers all point that an armed populace is lowers crime.

Many counties have banned guns and the crime and death by guns goes up.They should check out the results of getting rid of guns before they do something stupid. Oh I forgot it is the governments job to do stupid things

In Texas you are allow to carry your rifle with you in your car..They must be very liberal.. At the same time they are the leaders in death penalty in the whole USA, and from my humble point of view , that 's not justice but the MOST horrible crime human society can create.

I just dont see myself carrying a rifle as a regular basic in Harvard or Sylicon Valley as an example..More guns and violence are not the answer..

The guns only demonstrate the sickness that the counties of the world are having. When I was young people had guns and no problem the death rate from crimes was low, matter of fact our house was never locked and we lived in a city in Canada. At that time very few seen the doctor or where using any type of drugs. Now everyone is on drugs illegal or legal not much difference. Almost everyone is taking one or more prescription drugs every day. Probably if we got off drugs the sickness of the world would disappear and the gun problem would solve itself. I don’t use drugs or have a gun but.

The importation of more weapons and bullets is the only answer. Keep killing each other so the US, UK, Germans and Canadians can steal all the wealth. Oh and at some point drugs will be cheap on the island so your kids will be addicted and unwilling to fight. The Haitians will take over the cities and make you work for them!

I disagree with Dolo. No offence, but Dolo must support the NRA down South somewhere. I'm afraid of guns because of the nuts that own them. Living in NY, I'm also afraid of terrorists. Can't help it - real stuff going on. My beautiful husband is Dominican and I want to get a place down there to be by his family. I was mugged in Sosua (no gun) and the conduct of the policia was a freak show. (White chick from NY must have cash,) It was so obvious they wanted their dirty hands greased. I'm afraid there is no real law in the DR. I'm afraid there really isn't someone I can turn to for help. I'm afraid of the poverty, little education, morality issues, animal abuse, etc. resulting in some nut pointing a gun in my face - but I want to live in paradise. Dolo - most people do not own guns to protect themselves. It's the paranoid, schizo loser crimiinals that own guns. Owning a gun should not be a "personal liberty" Living free of fear should be. Viva DR!
