Santo Domingo.- The imminent opening of the Coral Highway, which links the Punta Cana-La Romana resort region ??with Santo Domingo, has begun to spur concern among business leaders and entities which promote tourism to the Americas’ first European city.

As part of the Third Press & Tourism Summit Santo Domingo 2012, representatives of the Santo Domingo Tourism Cluster, Tourism Ministry and the National Hotels and Tourism Association (Asonahores) cautioned that the Dominican capital needs to improve its structures and services, to receive the hundreds of thousands visitors expected once the highway is inaugurated.

Tourism Vice minister Fausto Hernandez said while the Government made ??significant efforts to encourage tourist visits, the sector’s other players also need to contribute to refurbish the city.

In that regard Asonahores spokesman Arturo Villanueva said the hoteliers want Santo Domingo’s limitations as a tourism destination to be addressed one by one, but with the speed which the large numbers of expected visitors merits.

Among other figures disclosed during the event hosted by the Dominican Tourism Press Association (Adompretur), is that more than 360,000 tourists from Punta Cana and La Romana will visit the Dominican capital via the Coral Highway annually.

With a little sprucing up, ( garbage collection at key areas), sufficient lighting 24/7, and dedicated police presence, SD can benefit greatly. Just keep noise and criminal activity under control and it will make for a great time for tourists.

It's about time we elevated SD to where it should be as a wonderful, learning, fun, first city of the Americas.

"Stampede" might be a wishful exaggeration, as the tourist business does not react so quickly, to new changes in infrastructure.
Still the Punta Cana tourists, which are the majority will have to spend three and half hours plus on the highway to arrive in SD, so package and bus tours will have to be designed, in agreement with the all inclusive packages at the hotels, that not necessarily encourage leaving the premises to other destinations for overnight visits.
Return trip excursions in the same day are possible but could be tiresome for must tourists that will need to spend 7 hours sitting in a bus, for a same day round trip.

Yesterday I travelled from la Romana to Punta Cana and then back to Zona Colonial ...I can tell everyone for certain that the opening of this highway is definitely not imminent , in fact I can see absolutely no detour around la Romana .I think the company must be paid more for every week of delay instead of the normal every week ahead of schedule

Is this going to be a 4 lanes HW each way or just 2 and 2 ? They may as well make it into a 4 and 4 plus detours if you don't want to go all the way to Santo Domingo in an 8 hrs stay by a cruise ship Remeber it pays to build for the future just in case the tourism gets demanding and doubles in the next 20 years, also puts more local people.to work in its construction business of an extension if it is 2 and 2 or at least when the need arises slowly start working on a 4 x 4 as the
HW pays for itself by collecting tolls as it is done in NJ P'kway towards Atlantic City or South Jersey

At any rate i think it is a very good idea. How about connecting Puerto Plata with Santiago which
is only 75 KMts? This way the Capital will be served by muliple HWs,(all rds leading to Rome) It will be needed anyways since the super port is going to be build by a foreign firm in Puerto Plata

"hundreds of thousands visitors expected once the highway is inaugurated."

The majority of peole who go to PC go there because it is cheap. They are not interested in the Dominican Republic thats why they go to the AIs.

I love the Zona Colonial and historically it is very interesting. But don't get carried away. It doesn;t have the monuments of say Havana or Quito or Mexico and will never be able to compete with them

No DomLo..

They dont go there because it's cheap..
They go because we have the most beautiful beaches in the world, and very friendly people as well..

And if you really want to Colonial Zone for cultural reason, we are the first on everything in the new world..The nest of new world..
Not to mention that we have the BEST tourist offer in the whole area..

People choose D.R. not because it's cheap but because it's perfect! D.R got everything!

Even less reason to go to Santo Domingo! Santo Domingo may have the first of everything but once it was established even the Spanish moved on to bigger and better things - Havana, San Juan, Mexico etc. I just don;t believe once the road is opened the Zone will be inumdated with tourists - it just doesn;t have teh infrastructure, monuments etc to warrent it.

If there are so many, may be they will need a high speed rail link.

i'm all in favor of new infrastructure as it is needed, i hope that someday the public works puts in motion a plan to help the poor build better homes and a plan to create employment for the millions of Dominicans who are unemployed and for the young men and women that often turn to crime because of the lack of work opportunities.

“I liked everywhere I went in DR, EXCEPT the CAPITAL!”

What a joke!
Meanwhile the Carretera leaving Santiago to Puerto Plata, Monte Cristi, and Navarrete is in unimaginable despair. Bumps after bumps, 30 feet of good asphalt 300 feet of bumps.
Worse is the lack of the yellow and white markings! Which make it very stressful to drive in them. Unbelievable and this goes on past Sosua. No wonder why tourism has decline in Puerto Plata. This tourism minister and the others jerks officials in the Capital are pure jerks. They only come to the Cibao to collect the hefty taxes.
I guess the interior provinces don’t count and do not deserve to enjoy the ocean in spite that the Cibao region does not have the need to be servants to tourists for we are self supported and self sufficient.

El Cibao taxes MUST stay in the Cibao!!

This might have been very good IF SANTO DOMINGO was a City filled by people and not a bunch of animals!! just go and have a walk by el malecon at night, if you don't loose your life on the process you will understand

Well said airgordo;

It is not to the best interest of the Capitalenos to repair roads that lead to the Ocean since that will

be competitive with them. They want you to depend entirely on them for anything. As to the Malecon

the animals should be treated as animals and have police presence enforcing the law at all times

By keeping the tolls down might help more travellers the use of the HW.

Is this what the Tourists are going to Travel from Punta Cana to See?

13 July 2012

"For everything"

A giant latrine and a breeding ground for mosquitoes because of its black waters I what are the abandoned facilities of the emblematic. Water and Light theatre. In addition it serves as public parking, a terminal of the buses of transport routes and as hotel for the prostitutes who are operating near the Center of Heroes.

See the picture at:

elnacional.com.do/nacional/2012/7/13/127872/Para-todo

With the money spent on Lie-onel and Danilo’s latest Do Nothing Trips it could probably have been rehabilitated!

Santo Domingo has a Huge Avenue BY THE SEA!! you can count with your fingers the amount of capitals on the world that have more POTENTIAL for tourism ! and we have the a LOT of nice colonial monuments! YES, it could be SOO MUCH BETTER if just the right people were the decision makers!
