NEW YORK. - Deputy Minou Tavarez Mirabal on Monday railed against what she calls the out of control possession of weapons in the Dominican Republic, and says it has a direct effect on society’s  vulnerable; children and women.

Nonetheless the ruling PLD party lawmaker said the government is currently implementing “responsible policies” on gun control and noted that the lack of clear international legislation has contributed to the trafficking and accumulation of weapons, which in her view is still one of the key hurdles to sustainable development, prevention and resolution of conflicts.

Speaking in the UN Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty, the lawmaker stressed that her country’s laws are strict against the possession and smuggling of all kinds of weapons.

"The national gun control system has effective procedures when issuing import permits, and a responsible policy in the field of arms control, these initiatives stem from our own recognition that inappropriately regulated weapons contribute to the current conditions of violence and instability which adversely affect the economic and social development of our peoples," Tavarez said.

Like a talking parrot she is just repeating the guidelines offered to her by "big sister" Hillary Clinton, and their "UN agenda for small arms treaty" or other nicer words for gun confiscation worldwide.
This measure can not and will not pass, and it is fervently opposed by the NRA in the US and Rand Paul, senator for Kentucky.

Small arms control. In the dark middle ages, farmers in Europe were not allowed to hunt, carry swords, daggers or bow and arrow. They were only allowed to pay taxes, invented to finance the so called protection by the king and his knights, later increased by the Vatican to pay for the crusades. The only people allowed to carry those arms, the kings, popes and their knights.
To get back to here and now. The only people allowed to carry firearms are, the police, armed forces, drug traders, human traffickers, thugs and street robbers. Oh, and don´t forget, the killers of wives.

And what caused the demise of the feudal societies, armored knights, and inequalities?
Answer: The invention of gunpowder and its export to Europe. No longer peasants where enslaved by
feudal lords with armor, swords and horses. One barefoot peasant could send to heaven a terrible knight with just his black powder rifle, end of story.

i remember my youthful days in Jamaica, when a guy with a ratchet knife was considered a fearsome individual. the worst that would happen to you in a fight was that some nitwit would crack you over the head with a two by four. then, the guns came. from everywhere. people became desensitized to violence, and people got shot, left and right, day and night. it only got worse. now, every night is like the Vietnam War. you lie in bed, and the guns never stop going off. i remember the police raiding a guy´s house, and he had a tripod mounted 50 caliber in his bedroom. one guy blew away a police car with a grenade launcher. if you own a revolver, you are a wimp. glocks are for small timers. real men tote bushmasters, and M16 carbines. it is coming here soon, to a barrio near you.

They are saying the only people that should have guns are the military, police and the crooks. Take them away from law obeying people. These are the only people who will admit having guns and they are easy because they applied for a permit to have one to protect themselves from the crooks. In the future they might have to fight for freedom. The people are easier to control when they can't protect themselves and the police will not protect them. Taking guns away from the law abiding people only opens the door for the crooks to come in and rob and murder without fear.

Generoso, That was only End of Story Part One. We are loving part two now, every Tom Dick and Harry, or Tomasso, Pedro y Juan. carries a gun. That in itself is not really a problem, if they know how to handle it. But I have to agree with Dreadlocks and Martin. The people who are not allowed to carry will be the victims.

What we really need is honest police man & courts.....and I hate to say this....the death penalty in some cases.

Most crimes committed in the DR are thugs with illegal firearms.

Is it any wonder why Dominicans take the law into their own hands.

I favor the ban of ALL firearms..You can not fight violence with more violence. We should reform the penal code: 3 strikes and you are out!

The only firearms the government is able to regulate are the legally owned firearms. I don't see much of a chance of tracking down and confiscating all the illegal handguns in circulation.
Since most violent crimes are committed with illegally owned weapons, I can't imagine a significant decrease of violent crimes after a possible withdrawal of legal permits... instead I fear a society, unprotected by the corrupt police and law, that will be confronted by armed criminals. Since one can not always expect protection from the government institutions, people here in the country need their guns not to fight crime but to protect themselfs from it!

riosm I agree with you ,,the only problem is that here in the DR many people live life on the edge and have no thought of the consequences of their actions

DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE JUSTICE SYSTEM FIRST!!!!!

The police can't be trusted and the courts are lame , don't disarm the country. If the police could Bum-Rush a prison and forcefully extract a fellow officer from jail, do you actually think they are law abiding citizens. At the end of the day in a gun battle it would be the citizens of the republic in the cross fire between street hoodlums and police thugs that spray-N-pray.
