Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic Academy of Sciences said on Wednesday said it opposes the exploitation of Loma Miranda, affirming that the mining can contaminate all water sources in the area.
Academy of Sciences spokesman and ecologist Eleuterio Martinez said Loma Miranda’s runoff irrigates nearly 8,000 hectares of rice fields in the area.
He said the hill must be preserved because of what he affirms are unusual characteristics such as its location in the foothills of the Central Mountain Range, which acts as a buffer of the trade winds.
Residents at Loma Miranda’s surroundings have staged several protests against the exploitation for precious metals by Xstrata Falconbridge, even rejecting the possibility of getting a job when the Canada based miner starts operations.

Wow Ant-knee, I thought you might be wearing your invisibility cloak today.
"Academy of Sciences spokesman and ecologist Eleuterio Martinez"<-------- What are you saying Ant-knee? If felix bautista can be a bodegero bag boy, construction manager , general contractor , foreman, construction engineer and consultant to the presidency without professional training, why can't a Ecologist be a Scientist in the Dominican republic ?

Of course an ecologist can be a scientist; just as a chemist, botanist, biologist etc. can be....especially if they have a Phd. !!

"Since when is an "ecologist" a scientist?"
An ecologist is a biological scientist whose specialization is in ecology.
To become an ecologist, you will need at least a master's degree. If you get very strong results in your undergraduate degree, you may be able to earn a place in a doctorate program right away. Alternatively, you could also enter a master's program, with a focus on the area of ecology you want to work in, then go on to a doctorate after that .
Ecology is the scientific study of the relations that living organisms have with respect to each other and their natural environment.
You may need to read things and look them up before you make more stupid comments....
But we all know that will not happen!

Quite right, Stillhere!
With some ignoramus', that's nearly an impossibility.
Glad to know there are still people out there who have the understanding of what it's being proposed and the common sense to refuse selling our children's legacy and well-being, for the short-term gain that this mine will produce!

Donella Meadows wrote back in 1980s when Reagan and IMF defined 'Free Trade',
"the new world trade system is a system with rules designed by corporations, run by corporations, for the benefit of corporations.
Its rules exclude almost any feedback from any other sector of society. Most of its meetings are closed even to the press (no information flow thus no feedback.)
It forces nations into reinforcing 'racing to the bottom' loops, competing with each other to weaken their environmental and social safeguards in order to attract corporate investment.
It's a recipe for unleashing 'success-to-the-successful' loops, until they generate enormous accumulations of power and huge centralized planning systems that destroy themselves."
I'd say she prophecied.

Respects to Dominicans like priest Rogelio Cruz and ecologist Eleuterio Martinez and the rest of Dominicans who take a stand with them, Amen.
Keep alert and remain steadfast while sociopathic vampiric capitalism dies the world over. It's very doubful capitalism will go away any time soon. It's not a perfect system, it has many shortcomings but, at least until we can invent something better, it's the best we've got.
One thing's for sure, the alternative isn't any better: Communism..shudder!
