Santo Domingo.- Although close to half of DT readers feel that president elect Danilo Medina hasn’t “pressed the flesh” with constituents prior to taking office on August 16, more than a third say he has been balanced in public appearances.

When asked “How has Medina handled himself during the transition?,” the response “Too aloof for my taste” drew 160 votes, or 40.51%, followed by “Has balanced his appearances” with 144 votes, or 36.46%

In third was the option “Too much access for the media,” with 48 votes, or 12.15%, followed by “He's just too tough to gauge,” with 43 votes, of 10.89% of the readers who took part in the unscientific weekly poll.

Everybody is on his @$$ right now. He's overwhelmed, if he can't handle it he should just give up now. If this is going to be his style of governance, he's going to suck because DR really needs a hands on type of dude. A pretty boy who can roll up his sleeves and bust some balls. I'm gonna start calling him Groucho Marx.

A Prophetic Blast from DT's Past that still has relevance for Danilo Medina on the eve of his swearing in!

"Dominicans can't afford another blind, deaf and mute leader"

In a recent fact finding trip to Dominican Republic, Ms. Heather Berkman, Associate for Latin America of the prestigious Eurasia Group, which evaluates political risks for major companies around the word, told a group of journalists and economists of how foreigners view the country, and its Government.

Some of the participants complained of the Government’s often laissez faire attitude in pressing issues, using words such as puzzling, lost opportunities, popularity, respect, too soft, strong character, silence or complicity with corrupt officials, and even visionary to describe president Leonel Fernandez’s role.

This brings to mind a statement by Máximo Padilla, president of the Committee of Dominicans Abroad (CODEX), who proposed that we should work together with president Fernandez during this time of economic crisis.

But Berkman said those feelings coincide with what she hears in Washington and in other places her work takes her. She said the government will be hard pressed to come up with set of public policies to meet the increasing demands from the populace, and reaffirmed a complaint of the lack of transparency on official matters

Adding to all this was Pope Benedict XVI’s request to “definitively” eradicate corruption in our country.

Most Dominicans want to work with Fernandez and credit him with many economic and institutional advances during his three terms in office, yet the constant calls to clean up his Cabinet seem to unfortunately fall on deaf ears, and remind us of the despot Joaquin Balaguer’s excuse for allowing rampant corruption, “I’m blind, deaf and mute.”

I'm sorry we could not implement a communist government like they did in Cuba Josean .I don't like many of Leonel's policies but compared to the ideology which you defend and the ideals you wish upon my nation we are very fortunate because Leonel and Balaguer before him at least have an idea of how to run a country while your comrades would have implemented and ideology that has failed every it has been implemented and that is as you are are inherently UN-democratic .You turn every post into a rant about Leonel yet have nothing positive to offer and ++

So the fact Medina was Marxist Leninist Maoist (and could still be for all we know) doesn't trouble yet you assume that because I don’t march lock step with you xenophobic racism I am a communist!

Medina WAS a follower of that idiotic and murderous ideology that has failed everywhere it was implemented but he has since RECTIFIED and MATURED while you have stayed in the same point in time.

The truth is I agree with some of your complaints about this government but not even Hipolitos government was without merit yet you lose merit when you attack everything like a blind man with a stick ...calling everything purple this or purple that like a rabid child out of control .If you would just limit yourself to what is really wrong with the government and perhaps remain silent when they actually do something correct or at least in the right direction then your posts might be taken seriously but as it is you come off as deranged and as one who hates the PLD so much you even put down DR which if you really are Dominican is very sad!
I will disregard your typical cheap shots but I must say "provocas vergüenza ajena"

Mr. 32,

You accuse me of being obsessed with the PURPLE NARCOS, which is not unlike your obsession with the Haitian “hordes” you claim are over running the country and responsible for the near annihilation of OUR country and OUR culture.

I too ”will disregard your typical cheap shots” of questioning my Dominican nationality and my Loyalty to the republic, simply for not be willing to go into the gutter of racism and xenophobia with you and others here at DT, who feel that by calling fellow HUMAN BEINGS mud cookie eaters, you enhance your legitimate complaint of illegal immigration.

How can I demand from the Spanish and American/Puerto Rican governments humane treatment for my fellow Dominican brothers who might have arrived at those foreign shores legally or illegally, if I am being less than humane to others who are coming to our country regardless of their legality?

I also agree with your concerns for the integrity of our border and the lack of respect for our laws by those who violate them by commission (Haitians) and omission the government!

However, we have one fundamental difference in our approach. I respectfully feel your harshness to Haitian illegals is disproportional to the power they have either here or in the country of origin.

How is it we pontificate about how” inferior” the Haitians are to us in every possible respect, from their “subhuman intellect,” as some choose to define the reason for their lack of progress, to their economic under development, and then have this IRRATIONAL FEAR that these “inferior mud eating people” are going to destroy the much richer “superior” Dominicans?

You see Pepe, as the religious man you are, it surprises me that being a believer and vehement defender of the Catholic Church , why your approach to the Haitian downtrodden wouldn’t be along the lines of “There but for the Grace of god Go I?”

So although we appear to BOTH be OBSESSED with a Cause, I respectfully believe my “Obsessive” Attacks on the PURPLE MAFIA are Justified because these criminals, short of an indictment, have REAL POWER and control REAL RESOURCES, which in my opinion are doing the REAL DAMAGE to our Culture ( by NOT FUNDING EDUCATION), Sovereignty ( by BORROWING or ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE Away) and Nationality (by allowing Haitian Elites to dump their poor on our side of the border and allowing our Elites to hire and super exploit the Haitian illegals, thereby suppressing wages and screwing the underpaid Dominican Worker hence impeding the development of a vibrant middle class)!

¡Pero cada loco con su tema, No!
