Santo Domingo.– Dominican and Jamaican experts are joining efforts to
mitigate the threat of invasive exotic marine species such as the lionfish, in the Caribbean.
According to the Dominican Ministry of Environment, the rapid spread of the lionfish in the Caribbean
threatens the sustainability of the fishing industry in the region.
The most recent action in this regard includes a workshop on management
and control held by Jamaican Dayne Buddo, of
the University of the West Indies.
In less than a decade, the Indo-Pacific lionfish has become widely established along the Caribbean and Southeast U.S., and now is invading the Gulf of Mexico and South America.
The experts said lionfish are capable of permanently impacting native reef fish
communities across multiple trophic levels and may hamper stock rebuilding efforts and coral reef
conservation measures.

The lionfish invasion is a serious problem throughout the Caribbean. Most probably starting with the release of aquarium fish they have spread like wildfire with no natural predators. Some reefs have seen a 90% drop of small and juvenile fish after the Lionfish takes hold.
It is a BIG PROBLEM!
In the US and the Bahamas They are promoting the consumption of the Lion Fish(It is supposedly quite tasty) and are holding Lionfish Tournaments in an attempt to control this invasive species.
The Carp being introduced in the DR are Triploid Grass Carp which are incapable of reproducing. They have been used extensively in Florida to control aquatic plants which choke the canals.

Interesting article, thank you for the link.
Did you read the bit that said:
"Many of the convicts sent to Australia in the 1700s and 1800s were transported for minor crimes such as stealing bread or riding off with someone's horse"?
The article neglected to mention that many of those involved in crime on a much larger scale, ended up in the House of Lords instead. Of course this would never happen in the Dominican Republic!
Note that the British did not "invade" Australia - it was Terra Nullis before they settled it. The stone-age savages that were there were almost extinct, (in stark contrast with the Tainos and Carib civilizations of Hispanola), and have benefited greatly from British colonization. Read "The Fabrication of Aboriginal History" by historian Keith Windshttle if you are in any doubt.

This is a species of lionfish from the S. Pacific and Indian oceans that may have invaded the area as a result of their popularity in N. American seaquariums or traveling as ballast aboard vessels. The Jamaican and Dominican joint effort to "mitigate" the invasion will have the same success as shoveling s*** against the tide. The countries do not have enough resources to fight the plague and would have to rely on outside funding to make any bold attempt to do so. The experts claim the fish can be "controlled" in some Caribbean locations. However, their language does not include eradicate. The Domincan government does not have the will or cash to fight off the fish.
The lionfish is viewed as a menace as it is a risk to reef communities. It is a predator fish capable to upset the local reef balance by preying on native species that are unable to fend off its attacks, thereby eliminating the native fish.
