Santo Domingo.- With three days to go before handing over power, president Leonel Fernández toured the north western border provinces of Dajabón and Montecristi to open a training school for the Specialized Frontier Security Corps (CESFRONT), a club, a sports stadium, and a housing project.

The total cost of these projects comes to RD$423 million, said the President’s Office.

The head of state exalted the importance of the club as well as the fact that the baseball field was named after Dominican baseball legend Juan Marichal.

The first project, the CESFRONT training academy, cost over RD$100 million to build and will contribute to tackling illegal immigration, weapons and drugs trafficking and terrorism.

In a speech, General Santo Domingo Guerrero Clase said that the military complex has three classrooms, a medical dispensary, offices, hangars for specialized equipment, a monitoring center, two cafeterias and a library.

Presidente Fernández then traveled on to Dajabón, where he formally opened a cultural club “El Ensueño Dajabonero”, built by the State Projects Engineers Supervisory Office at a cost of RD$53 million.

Dajabón governor Esther Ramírez said that it was the most modern cultural center in the region and that it would “encourage the younger generations to learn about culture”.

This is ribbon cutting all and good.

But, the real indicator of the Fernández legacy will be the eleventh hour presidential pardons. Who is selected to be pardoned will show where his heart or wallet is.

Wow, He's going out with a bang, isn't he?..He wants to be remembered as "the one" who built lots of stuff, therefore, should be strongly considered for a future term.! Yes?.. Or so he thinks.

All things considered, the guy has been better than most other presidents. At least our economy has been stable for most of his tenure. Also, building a Metro, as controversial as it has been, is a good thing, regardless of his motivation for it...Still, I wouldn't vote for the guy again.
He's proven to be a part of the big problem with corruption and has not done enought to improve our nation's standing in education.

Good riddance, Leonel!...Glad to see you go.

Vacanos, only locos and altaneros would opt for paying $5.50USD per gallon of regular gas, ($6.75, for premium) and keep bleeding the country of needed $$ by purchasing oil to power gas-guzzlers!

Our Metro charges $0,50cents per ride, but it's subsidized, which syphons money from other important projects, true, but at least the money STAYS in our economy, not in Chavez's coffers.

Anyone with a little common sense, can see this. Unfortunately, (and to our chagrin), there are a few typical Dominican super-idiots, that do not have that ability...Alas!

If we could at least get one third of those illegals out of the country it would make everything so much smoother for the government and for Dominican citizens, and if we could get half of them out, we would probably have enough resources for all.

Btw, I love how the UN likes to publish a minuscule number for the amount of illegal Haitians in our country.

Stillhere,
What's good for Santo Domingo is good for the country. Sure not every Dominican lives there, but the Dominican Republic's biggest city has one of the highest concentrations of its population living there - more than London, New York, Moscow and Sydney - all that benefit greatly from their underground railway system. Given the massively inadequate state of the road system, the total absence of freeways and the appalling driving habits of Dominican moterists, a Metro for Santo Domingo is even more desirable. It just needs to be far more extensive than it is at the moment. If ans when there is a surface rail to Santiago, and if it integrates with the Metro, then it will be even more useful, making daily commuting a practical possibility.

Give it a few years to build the fulfilled and concluded system, and you'll have a station within walking distance.!
That is the plan and the perfect solution to many of our obstacles to prosperity, beginning with reduction in oil imports, to the ease, safety and comfort of commuting to work and school!
Believe me friend, nothing as positive has happen in our nation, as this crazy, but effective way to advance our lot in life.!!
The next step is to build railroads fueled with Biodiesel produced in our own country.!!

Why do you don't want to or can't answer the question?

Ron. my problem is not with having a metro, it is the cost at this time with metro line 2 running short on money already, the fact that all metros around the world run to a CBD, Santo Domingo has no CBD to speak of, that it came at the expense to the whole nation , not the city. Last .. a rail network between major towns is more needed and would move freight and passengers, including tourists.
Yes a metro is a good thing when all linked together and have a clear path to why it goes somewhere, but it's not the countries major priority for the vast amount spent on it.

Hi I am josean and I endorse the following opinion:

"Leonel Fernández Reyna wanted to be a Pharaoh and ruled against the country"

"Pedro Catrain, political analyst and lawyer, harshly criticized the management of Dr. Fernández and did not make any concessions to those that give many praise administration that concludes."

"SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic.-With governmental management of 8 years of Leonel Fernandez the country receded institutionally and politically, and the President of the Republic only insisted on preparing conditions for his next return to power, forgetting its high responsibility to Dominican society."

"The judgment was rendered by the lawyer and political scientist Pedro Catrain, who censured in a rough way the unethical conduct of the President of the Republic, who allowed corruption, did not deliver EDUCATION resources and provided for the institutional regression of various State bodies, including Congress and the judiciary."

if u like it or not but the truth of the matter is
haitian workers have long been a mainstay of dominican agriculture, construction and other low-wage industries.
used to watch the haitians go into the sugar cane fields to cut the cane while the dominicans stood of the side lines holding their presidente in their hands and in the shade.
sure the dominicans are going into the fields but not in this life time.
if they did this now can they then pay attention to their drug business and the business of robbing cell phones from young girls.

will someone who supports the efficacy of the metro please show me some studies pertaining to

1..carbon particulate reduction

2...reduction in traffic congestion

3...reduction in drive times

4..reduction in consumption of petroleum and its derivatives

when someone does that, then we can argue the relative merits of the initiative. otherwise, it is just a case of taking sides.

by the way, we can also get into the opportunity costs of undertaking the metro, versus other pressing initiatives. and, do not forget, it will have to be subsidized, in perpetuity. that is money that could have gone elsewhere.

finally, the sunway system in a city like NYC takes productive people from outlying areas, into the business centers. Wall Street types, and other productive people, use it to go to work in the hubs of commerce. what is the demographic of the catchment areas of the metro, and its stops along the route?

My personal opinion on the METRO building is:

Every Dominican in the back of his head had " If we could have a metro build like the one in NYC
for a growing population in SD" but again where are we going to get the fundings for such megga project? No one gives you any thing, with out strings attached. The time was riped after the earth quake in Haiti, and the first thing to show up was A US air craft carrier instead of 3 or 4 Navy Hopsital ships,All nations in the world promissed to help reconstruct Haiti very few came thru there after. The only country that showed up for a price was DR in exchange for building such a Megga project by the W/B, IMF, who opened credit line to the present DR gvt, backed up by WDC,,DR has promised to absorve all illegals and cheap labor from Haiti in exchanged for the loans. The US"s economy been the only healthy one, took it upon hemselves with their power and influence to relocate...

Written by: MrThelmoAlmeydaRancier, 14 Aug 2012 12:26 PM
From: United States, NJ
continue:

Once the Haitians were placed onboard US Hospital Ships there was no way out for the USA but to take them in the main land, which they were not about to do.The cheapest and most logical way for them was to force the DR gvt to take them all in,even if our DR hospitals became full of all kind of Haitians and contageous deseases that were carried by them. To have such ungratefull
Haitians demanding of what DR should do for them via UN, and French nationalized Haitians
LF did not give it a two hoops the outcome of all these as long as his Megga project got build and its outcome.
If you ask me I don't think the DR nation owes the W/B or the IMF a cent and call it all even except
help them complete the Metro at no cost to DR as agree.I would suggest that Mr Tolentino and DR
gvt envolved in all these transaction give the DR people full accotability for what took place and bring it to light.
