Santo Domingo.- On the eve of handing over the reins of power to presiden-elect Danilo Medina, outgoing president Leonel Fernández enjoys a 79% public approval rating, according to poll company Asisa Group Research.

The Fernández government’s failure to punish corrupt government officials is considered the most negative aspect of his administration, while the most positive point for most of those surveyed was the construction program.

A total of 49% said that the next president, Danilo Medina, would replace all the government officials.

69% expressed optimism that things would improve under Medina. Danilo Guzmán, company business director said that the poll was conducted with a sample of 3,569 people.

No, that can't be 79%? BS.

The only thing this guy did was build things, that's it; everything else was a mess; from education, crime, government corruption, drugs, to immigration. He leaves a country full of Haitians and the drug trade higher than ever.

Hey guys last week the radio talk show El Govierno de La Manana did a survey on the president approval rating and the rating were, Gold, Silver and Brounce medal. 20 callers where allowed to vote for one of the above medal and guess what? out of 20 callers Leonel got 14 Gold Medals and 6 Brounce medals which cause Alvaro Arvelo to almost have a heart attack as he is a very good and closed friend of Hipolito. Alvaro even said that someone within the radio station manipulated the calls something totally out of line because the producer of the sho Willy Rodriguez whom I know personal and the majority of the team are pro Hipolito. So I say yes to the 79% approval rating. Remember that during the last election all the negative were against Leonel Gorvernment and not against Danilo another reason why the Hipo group lost the election by attacking Leonel instead of going after Danilo.

With the education level so low due to LF's screwing with the funds, the people conducting this poll had a problem with percentages. They mistakenly thought that 79 out of 1000 equals 79%.

The construction, the improvement of the infrastructure, has improved the day to day lives of the community and will be his badge of honor for the years to come.

However, as the article relates to his failure to punish criminals will come back to haunt him negatively for future asperation for office.

That is very true. I think he had the intention of doing good but our country's history prove once again that you will need a lyon to keep the herd in check. We had the misfortune of having a weak president with a low blood of nationalism in his vein.

79% in favor? lol, that is funny. Must be the same poll that Trujillo used, when he won elections with 97% of the vote.
Only the test of time will pronounce sentence, on the pluses and minuses of LF latest 8 year term in office.
He had pluses and he also had minuses, the percentages will be awarded years later by historians, and by the Dominican citizens in retrospect.
In a few days, the DR will celebrate another peaceful transition, always striving towards more democratic and egalitarian governments, which we all should support, as well as judge by their actions.

Anyone with the power to make a difference and throught inaction, allows criminal activity to thrive, is a bigger criminal himself.!

Somehow it doesn’t surprise me that our comrades display that kind of childish attitude, this is not about who won or loss; this is about the fate of a whole nation. I liked Guillermo Moreno as a candidate, not because I was to gain anything from the unlikely event that he would’ve been elected, but because I thought he was the better candidate. He was the only candidate to come forward and present to the Dominican people a plan of action to be implemented if he was elected. He was also the only candidate to give priority to the fundamental problems afflicting our nation, such as immigration, education, crime, corruption etc. etc. Perhaps most important in my view was the fact that he expressed fervent patriotism and genuine intentions of making our institutions functional.

STUPID i would call anyone that actually believe that BS of 79%, this figure is from ASISA that earns millions doing PLDs surveys every election! if Leonel Fernandez reach 45% i will consider it to be VERY fortunate!!! the Proof? HIS PARTY LOST close to 200,000 votes on the past election, that is a FACT and the PLD also lost on nearly every province, those are the numbers that support the real approval rate on this individual.

Leonel's biggest failure which is closely tied to his greatest triumph was his failiure to manage and control the Haitian invasion of the first decade of the 21st century. Propelled by the import of dirt cheap labor from the neighboring nation, he was able to complete numerous construction projects which left a generation of Dominican workers unemployed and seeking a better opportunity by risking their lives in yolas crossing the Mona Passage. That will be his historical legacy.

Josean, that was a good one about the cepillo.
Touche to Juanb on 79 of 1000. Also brother we are not afraid of Haitians, we are just aware of their historical intentions. They invaded forcefully at the turn of the 19th century and it took us 5 to 6 wars with them to force them out for good in that century. They invaded peacefully at the turn of the 20th century when the Americans were in control of the whole island. It took the brutality of Trujillo to expel them at the point of bayonets.

And now here we are at the turn of the 21st century and guess "who's baaaaack?". For us to allow this latest invasion( again with a peaceful and humanitarian undertone) to stand would spit in the face of the heroic sacrifice made by patriots 2 centuries ago and the wise although forceful policies of our leaders of the last century. Unfortunately the Haitians are short on memory and long on taking advantage of our generosity. They will not leave willingly and the actions of past heroes and dictators will be repeated in the not too distant future as their numbers continue to grow to the point of Dominican desperation.

Redondas, triangulares, cuadradas, lineales, coloridas, luminosas u oscuras, orgánicas, vitales, ligeras o espesas. A veces sedosas o ásperas. Astringentes, picantes, dulces o amargas. Acuosas, aéreas, minerales. También irregulares y secas. Pero bellas. Bellas y enigmáticas. Y fragantes.

Yo esperaba algo diferente. No mucho.
