Santo Domingo.- Former opposition presidential candidate Hipólito Mejía has offered president elect Danilo Medina his support in the implementation of actions that benefit the vast majority of Dominicans.

“President Danilo Medina, we have a commitment to the country, for which we are always willing to offer our cooperation in any actions directed at benefiting the great majorities,” he stated.

In a speech made two days before Medina takes power, Mejía said that the new president would need to concentrate on all the nation’s strengths in order to solve the problems left by the Fernández administration and stressed that facts, not words would define his attitude towards the president.

He said that the Dominican Republic could not cope with the new government continuing on the irresponsible path of “extravagant expenses of the PLD administrations”.

Mejía, who represents a PRD party faction, said that he would not support any tax reform that harmed the public or the productive sectors.

He warned that he would be alert in order to save the people from paying the price of the financial disaster he said had been left by president Leonel Fernández.

“Our economists are predicting that by the end of December, this deficit will stand at RD$118 billion, which will have serious consequences for Dominican families”, he stated.

Mejía was critical of the Fernández administration. He blamed the president for the collapse of the agricultural sector, the unrestrained increase in imports and the enrichment of government figures and for issuing food importation permits.

I know we don't consider Mejia a competent political figure, but it is good that the government has some form of opposition. This is healthy for the functionality of our young democracy.

What makes Hippo the worst President in Dominican History or the World, as juanb has labeled him, was not necessarily his administration of the Dominican State, because as even Pepe32 has said “it had some merits;”…. what makes him bad and I will never forgive him for, is for not LOCKING UP Lie-onel in 2000!

He would have saved the Republic from these 8 years of Unprecedented GROSS STEALING by Lie-onel and his Narco Cohorts!

He is competent, he is smart enough not to mention his administration.... He will be bought as well, this is only hype to get a botella position. ........I hope I'm wrong! Then again, leonel did everything I said he would(Criminal minds think alike) with the deal with the refinery and the monies borrowed from the IMF to pay off that bill they are mentioning.

Leonel mastered the art of doing the "Slip-n-Slide" through a pile of shet and coming out polished at the other end

"He warned that he would be alert in order to save the people from paying the price of the financial disaster"

12 years too late. LOL

Hippo's disastrous term in office, 2000-2004, has gone down as the worst in modern day DR history. Only Josean defends him now, but that "botella" from 2000-2004 has run dry.

One need only re-read your postings leading up to the election this year to see where you stand, Hippo-Josean.

Receiving Hipolito's blessings is about as important as a U.S. political figure receiving blessings from Marrion Berry or James Traficante. What a quack....

It will be interesting for some people here that know our history to start a debate as to who was the worst governments in DR history. My opinion is that the winner will come down to Salvador Jorge Blanco and Hippoburo and Antonio Guzman get a close second.

Josean, how can you blame Leonel so much about the "narco" problem, but not Hipo Loco. Leonel has done more than any other president for our country. Balaguer wasn't really a president so he cannot be included (He was a dictator). I've seen more good done by the PLD than by the PRD. Yes the PLD hasn't solved many of the nation's problems, but they solved many issues. I didn't see anyhting being solved by the PRD. In just 8 years San José de las Matas, where I'm from, has changed greatly. We have more schools, more roads, and the electricity problems isn't as bad as it use to be. A president can solve many issues, but as good as he might be he is not a god and won't be able to solve all of them.

The one good thing about "El Burro", is that he represents a good role model of what a failed individual acts and talks like.
Pretty much like some posters here. They talk a lot, but say nothing!

It's smart statement of Mr. Mejia. DR needs a intelligent, productive and positive opposition. This gave credibility.
