Santo Domingo.- Danilo Medina is being sworn in as President of the Republic today amidst great public expectations created by his campaign promises. Medina, an economics graduate, is a former deputy and presidency minister as well as a member of his PLD party’s political committee.

The president-elect was born on 10th November 1951 in Arroyo Cano, a poor community in the south west of the country.

His campaign promises for the next four years include maintaining macro-economic stability, reducing poverty, increasing purchasing power and boosting production.

He also pledged to prioritize women’s issues, fight femicides and include women in his cabinet.

He promised the middle classes that he would not let them lose their gains or their dreams.

In the area of education, he declared he would increase the budget to 4% of the GDP.

Medina promised to restructure the national educational system towards a single school day shift, dignified salaries for teachers and a decentralized Ministry of Education.

In the area of health, he said he would work towards universal coverage with quality services at a reasonable cost. He stated that the social security system would prioritize the poorest sectors.

When it comes to citizen safety, Medina said he would work towards eliminating violence and promoting high levels of security. He committed to “a fierce fight” against all types of crimes, with an emphasis on organized crime and drug trafficking.

Medina spoke of combating social crime, which he said was the result of poverty and marginalization.

He said that the best weapons for tackling these problems were education, employment and increased opportunities for the people. He also said he was committed to work and to he workers, and promised dignified salaries and job security.

The president-elect guaranteed he would adopt a set of measures for preventing administrative corruption. He has signed a pact with the civic movement Citizen Participation, in which he agreed to fulfil their 30 recommendations for transparency and fighting against corruption.

He declared in his proclamation speech: “I will arrive at the National Palace with my heart for the poor, but with a whip for the dishonest”.

Medina is taking over power in country that although stable, has a deficit estimated at close to RD$100 billion, and age-old, unsolved problems including poverty, electricity, education, violence and crime. One of his first tasks may be to sign an International Monetary Fund agreement involving fiscal reform and other unpopular measures. He will also have to take into account the international financial crisis.

We shall all pay close attention to his inaugural speech, and actions of the next three months. All new administrations, deserve at least the first 100 days to pass, to judge their actions.
I am positive that his appointments for ministers and public employees, will surprise many, delight some, and piss off a few.

Do you even think before you type?

I am sure that will go over well with his running mate.

Josean, give the man at least 100 days before you begin your idiocy. HE is after all committing his Administration to 4% of PIB for education, and a FULL DAY of instruction per grade per year of his Administration.

other day they the courts gave a man 15 years in jail for having sex with a 12y old plus 15 years having to wear a electronic monitoring device for other 15 years probationary period,he had raped this girl and impregnated her.
this happen in key largo florida.
he was facing a life sentence but the family did not want the child to gothough a trial and move on with their lifes.
so this guy would have gotten life in jail for this crime., and they do give this sentence for this crime, while in the dr if the family has some thing to say about a crime like this all one needs to is buy the family a new tv, bedroom set, new couch and give them a few pesos and your problem is gone.

Isn't one of DT's rules that members do not flood forums by posting out of the ordinary number of comments? Danny00 has 10 on this article alone and counting..

Congrats,

Hard work ahead of him. Lets all give the man a chance and see what he is made of.

Anyhting is better than a regurgitated president e.g. Hipo Loco.

Regardless of political affiliations, I think that the man has a good heart and also a mission.

Lets see the delivery system for his promisses now!

Cheers amigos

Are you quite done with your juvenile comments and insults! Your lower-than-average IQ shows!

For you the glass is always half-empty. GROW-UP!

Our country is continuing the path of progress and building up the institutions that guarantee peace and liberty to the people. Improvement and implementation over issues that has been established is one thing, but doing what has never been done cannot be found in his inaugural speech. As others have mentioned, let's give President Medina a chance to show what he can do. Let us pray that all the good news is out before the first one hundred days of Medina.

"Quisqueya sin Miseria" is the first project announced by President Medina in his inaugural speech. It looks like our cry is being heard in regards to the true national identity of our country and our people. I trust that through this project our efforts of four years see the light and get the attention needed from our historians and politicians. Quisqueya should be the name of our country, even though we keep the correct title of Dominican Republic, since ours is a republic in the Island of Santo Domingo. Our national identity should be that of Quisqueyans, although our regional identity is Dominican, relative to the name of the island.
