What no one understands is that the boom in Europe, USA and Asia in the 90's and up to the crisis actually floated everyone's boat. Now Brazil, DR and other so-called emerging markets are actually sitting suspended in mid-air teetering on a free fall like in Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal etc that have grown without restraint and taken on too much debt. China won't keep anyone a float any more and no one is running to the DR to invest any more because it is highly over valued in its own little bubble of artificial economy at the tail end of the boom. Danilo is poised to fail now only because he will have to pay for the PLD shopping spree and excesses of an economy that is unsustainable. Pueblo Viejo may even make it worse because there will be more belief that it is a Rich country and further increase debt. I hope he is honest enough to tell everyone that the party is over and that times ahead will be tough for the DR and the rest of the world -until all boats rise again.

More Slaps to the Former Narco President's Face!
Read in between the lines:
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic.- The constitutional President of the Republic, Danilo Medina, told the people that "know that they will have in him a President who will start of the government policies that you, Dominicans, are waiting for" this Thursday.
(Take that Lie-onel!)
He said that "I have not come to just manage the country, I have come to give a new and strong impetus to progress and social inclusion".
(Take that Lie-onel!)
"I am not going to negotiate with mediocrity, I am not going to negotiate with the dishonest, I am not going to negotiate with the reluctance," he argued.

"The Dominican people have given me a great responsibility." The responsibility to respond to the desire for change and renewal that beats in their hearts. I will not betray this aspiration. "I, today more than ever say, in the solemnity of this act of swearing, I come to do what has never been done", said Medina.
(Take that Lie-onel!)
He pointed out that "God is witness of my sincerity." My guide will be the phrase of the Gospel: "By their works ye shall know them".
(Take that Lie-onel!)
He pointed out that "that from now on, it will be the facts that will speak." Today begins the language of the long-awaited transformations and concrete achievements. "Let’s put the best of ourselves to realize the dreams and aspirations, not only of the present generations, but also those who come behind."

The best of luck in thsese difficult time the country is facing.
From what I gathered in his speech a lot a big dose of social programs is coming up for the country from education to youth programs and NOTHING ZERO NADA in Public works (infrastructure). I dont know where the fund is coming from for all these programs he promised expecially that the external debt is in the 30 Billions Dollar.
On Immigration from what I gathered statu quo will be in place. He stated that he will pursue the corruption inside the military regarding allowing Haitians into the country. I dont buy it he was not strong enough. Plus I did not hear him say about deporting them back to their country or creating a wall. The fusion with Haiti will continue for another four year.
From what I saw in his speech the country will be going to the hard left in the mold of Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela minus the knucklehead brain.
Lets all hope he does the best for our piece of land.

There are 609,525 people on the public payroll. The government is the leading employer, with hundreds of thousands of new employees added to the government payroll during the past eight years of the Fernandez administration. Taxpayers have to cover the RD$9.23 billion cost of the payroll, despite the fact that most of the employees provide minimal if any service to the country. Of this total, the central government employs 465,807, according to a report in Diario Libre.

synapse, that was one strong piece that you wrote, early on in the thread. i guess you saw the article where a group of economists has stated that the DR GDP growth has been overvalued by about 36% over the recent past, because it miscalculates the effects of the consumption of petroleum , and its derivatives. so, we have been thinking that things are just peachy, but, in reality, we have been seeing a bubble economy that is going to explode, in the foreseeable future. the investment money is not pouring in, like people think. it is money being laundered, because of the laxity of currency enforcement in this country, as opposed to other territories in the region. when the Russians, and other players, start to really transfer funds here, it is going to severely revalue the DR peso, and have deflationary consequences on the economy. stand by for adventure

Josean,
Dr. Moreno is right when he says that these crooks reassigned by Danilo will hold back any attempt to change things, but remember if our president intends to stamp out corruption, he will have to do it on step at the time. There are powerful people from the previous administration that can have his head on plate if he steps out of line. Give him time, if things stay the same after the first year then he is the same as all of them.

I respect your counsel but it appears that Danilo wrote checks he can't not cash, both during the campaign and in his speech yesterday and although we can cut him some slack for the hyperbolic rhetoric that comes from most politicians, I however, must take exception that it’s a matter of “Giving him time.”
This guy has been running for president since 2000, he raised his head again in 2008 and was elected in May of this year. He was a Legislative Deputy, he held a high administrative office, he is a trained economist and is coming into office behind two consecutive administration of his own party and is keeping the majority of the players in place.
So certainly it is not unreasonable to expect him to hit the ground running a little faster than most.

his checking account is way overdrawn. i like the guy´s enthusiasm, but the worst thing you can do is to make outrageous promises that you probably cannot fulfil. people look at those, carefully, come re election time. besides, i am in severe disagreement with him on this insane idea of attracting more and more cruise ships, which is a HORRENDOUS idea. a new approach to development is needed, and tourism dependency is not it. besides, the idea of 10 million visitors, by whenever, is further indication of a lack of vision, since more heads on beds is no guarantee of economic development. seems like more of the same, to me.

Dr. Dread,
This is what I think is the current status of Mr. Medina.
In 2006 he challenged Lie-onel's supremacy in the PLD and was castrated into submission during the primary fight of 2007. Danilo was not only defeated by the “Resources of the State” as he cried but was also stabbed in the back by members of the PLD Political Committee, other party and elected officials. I think he finally realized in 20011 that the deal cut in 1996 by him a Lie-onel to alternate at the presidency was Null and Void. Especially with the media spectacle orchestrated by Felix Bautista with the so-called two million signatures asking Lie-onel to run again.

Additionally, even after Lie-onel could not stand for re-reelection he sent his minions of candidates, many of them nonsensical, after Danilo along with his wife. He felt that his wife would have a good opportunity against Danilo if they could split the vote, however apparently this was too much for some in the PLD and they forced Margarita to withdraw.
Now, Danilo thinking he had the upper hand after winning the primary became coy about who his choice for VP would be. That’s when Lie-onel laid the law, you will do as I say, appoint my wife VP, and retain this list of my officials when you are elected or your obsessive dream of being president will never happen. So Danilo knowing that Lie-onel and his friends have deep pockets filled with ill-gotten wealth in the last years, to either make him win or make him lose, succumbed once again “to the power of the state!”

I think Lie-onel took all the fight out of Danilo and now he is just going along for the ride, to satisfy the ego of his own personal ambition of having achieved the presidency, even if it’s only as a consolation prize!
Hence, why his administration so far appears to be Lie-onel 4.0!

Mr. Hernandez,
I respect your counsel but it appears that Danilo wrote checks he can't not cash, both during the campaign and in his speech yesterday and although we can cut him some slack for the hyperbolic rhetoric that comes from most politicians, I however, must take exception that it’s a matter of “Giving him time.”
his checking account is way overdrawn. i like the guy´s enthusiasm, but the worst thing you can do is to make outrageous promises that you probably cannot fulfil. people look at those, carefully, come re election time. besides, i am in severe disagreement with him on this insane idea of attracting more and more cruise ships, which is a HORRENDOUS idea. a new approach to development is needed, and tourism dependency is not it. besides, the idea of 10 million visitors, by whenever, is further indication of a lack of vision, since more heads on beds is no guarantee of economic development. seems like more of the same, to me.
Dread he can't run again so this makes Santo Danilo even potentially more dangerous, especially keeping Lie -onel's well trained and oiled apparatus of theft and corruption as his Cabinet!
Dr. Dread,
This is what I think is the current status of Mr.

So Danilo knowing that Lie-onel and his friends have deep pockets filled with ill-gotten wealth in the last years, to either make him win or make him lose, succumbed once again “to the power of the state!”
continued:
I think Lie-onel took all the fight out of Danilo and now he is just going along for the ride, to satisfy the ego of his own personal ambition of having achieved the presidency, even if it’s only as a consolation prize!
Hence, why his administration so far appears to be Lie-onel 4.0!
