SANTO DOMINGO.- Government officials and private sector representatives yesterday admitted that salami factories operate without control, but pledged to correct it to secure higher quality for consumers.

The ministries of Health, and of Industry and Commerce, the Consumer Protection and the Standards and Quality agencies, together with the Dominican Industries Association announced the completion of a study on the management and quality of sausages from their manufacture to the point of sale.

"We’re aware that there may be anomalies in the market, problems in the preservation of products, as well as counterfeit brands which affect legitimate ones should be corrected to provide higher quality items to citizens," they said in a statement.

Despite the affirmation, Health minister Bautista Rojas asked the population to confidently consume Dominican salamis with sanitary registry, since in his view they are products with the required quality standards guaranteed.

He said the industry’s technological advances implemented into the packing process ensure quality.
