Santo Domingo.- National Government Reform Council (CONARE) director Marcos Villamán yesterday said a poor country cannot make highly paid officials rich with salaries that people can’t afford.
"You cannot disrespect and insult the people by paying officials a salary way above what Dominican society can afford."
He said lawmakers should be cautious prior approval of the Civil Service Wage Regulation bill, because in his view there are officials who should be paid with fairness and flexibility, taking society into account. We’re in a poor country and they must be remunerated fairly, with dignity, but that means justice for both and for society as a whole," he said.
"I think that if there’s an exorbitant salary it’s disrespectful of the population, and if it exists I believe it should be corrected because it creates serious problems of governance which must be avoided."

The Dominican politician has no respect for its citizens.
The only respect a Domincan politician has is to his wallet.

Why not?
It always has.
Think about this. A bill is drawn up to limit the amount that officials can be paid, and those very same officials are able to change it into a massive pay increase.
And the people remain silent, just hoping to maybe get a crumb if it falls off the table.
We get the government we deserve, and right now, we sure have it.

Only makes sense: you pay your officials based on your ability to pay as a society. A poor nation with a low wage salary base of 5,000 pesos must adhere to some balancing. To pay officials based on what these positions would command in much richer societies does both the developing nation and state a massive disservice.

there are two schools of thought on salaries of politicians and senior government people ,,,the first one is that if you pay peanuts you get monkeys and so you need to pay good salaries to attract the right people and the other view is that people who serve in the government should have a very high sense of doing a duty for their country which is more important than a high salary ,
The first thing I would do here is reduce the number of politicians ,,there are way too many for the small size of the country , I would also penalise them for non attendance and I would bring the normal politicians salary down to a level of a well payed employee .

Yes, reduce the size of government. Too many positions essentially doing nothing but orchestrating some means of enriching themselves off the State.

That kind of reminds me of a quote by Groucho Marx:
I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.
If I were a Dominican politician, I would also not respect any citizen that would elect me for office.

Let Dominican teachers and police make 1/2 what each politician makes and watch how much better the country is.Even 1/4 would be reasonable.

It is not only the politicians who have no respect for the country. The people who elect them do so out of perceived self interest - so they get what they deserve.
