Santo Domingo.- President Danilo Medina’s confirmation by decree of José R. Taveras as Immigration director Tuesday signals the Government’s continuing stern policy of repatriating undocumented Haitians.
Taveras, of the conservative pro-government coalition FNP party is known for a tough-nosed approach to stem the flow of undocumented Haitians across the border, despite shortcomings in the agency’s resources.
He has also confronted the construction and agro sectors over violations to the foreign personnel quota, and has engaged the tourism sector’s efforts to regulate their foreign employees.
Medina also named Vice president Margarita Cedeño coordinator of the Social Policies Cabinet, and Elias Wessin Chavez will be the new administrator of the National Assets Agency (BN); José Francisco Peña Taveras to head the National Lottery, and Ramon Rivas in the Dominican Port Authority.

A very respectful summation. Taveras needs resources and I hope Danilo provides him with enough to do the job. Get tough on violators of the law and help turn the tide of the lawlessness that prevails in DR, especially along the border with Haiti.

No way have I expressed "my country right or wrong" non-sense. I've stated very clearly that businesses in DR that don't follow the law should come under fire for their practices. And that the government shares a direct responsibility for not providing adequate resources to defend the borders. People that take advantage of the long suffering people of Haiti-like those recently reported on from Santiago who didn't pay their workers- have no Mulligan.
The question you Josean run away from is: what about the Haitian State and Nation? Their lack of responsibility to each other is what's really driving the flow of people. DR didn't create the mess in Haiti and so DR should and must not be dumped on and made the scapegoat in the on-going tragedy known as Haiti. What Dominican Elites need is a Qualified Working Force. Remark "Qualified"
1.- It must be remunerative, adequate payments, as incentive.
2.- It must be subjected to the law and what the law stipulates: 80% MUST BE from the local Market, the Rest CAN BE, but not necessarily NEED to be FOREIGNERS and IF then they need to suit the law.

Great news! I was hoping for José Ricardo Taveras to be confirmed by Danilo. In June of this year, when the deadline to regulate foreigners in the DR passed, the director started flexing his muscle and giving ultimatum's to the agricultural and construction moguls, to regulate the status of the thousands of illegals being employed by the private sector. They cried "uncle" and refused to pay up the fees to regulate the residency status of the foreign workers, including Haitians, and complained bitterly to LF.
LF called Taveras urgently to a meeting at the palace, and told him to cool it, Taveras replied that he rather turn in his resignation immediately, because he was only doing his job, and walked out.
LF didn't think wise to fire him just weeks away from Danilo swearing in, and he stayed.
José Ricardo will get the job done to regulate the thousands of illegals, and repatriate those that are loitering the country side. We need to offer all our support to his good work.

People leave Haiti for DR (or wherever they can go), people leave DR for the US. On the Haitian side you have an immense level of poverty, on the Dominican side you have a need for cheap labor. Therefore you have a recipe for disaster. Both sides have to work together to alleviate the problem. It will take an International effort as well.

How can anyone justify hiring "cheap laborers" for measly salaries? That is shameful.
I remember a fellow student in the university in the US, offered a high paying job, running a sweat garment factory in Haiti, and he put the offer to the class for opinions, and we all urged him including our professor, not to be part of an enterprise that exploited other human beings, no matter what the financial incentives where. He reconsidered and turned the job down.
The DR does not need the karma that brings exploiting the Haitians, and paying them measly salaries or none at all, in some cases. The DR needs to hire Dominicans, at better pay rates, and also stop postponing the mechanization of the agricultural and construction industries, once and for all.
The illegals must go back or be repatriated, and the Haitians that choose to stay and have a job, must regularize their residency status, and get official documents.

Correction:
What Dominican Elites need is a Qualified Working Force. Remark "Qualified"
1.- It must be remunerative, adequate payments, as incentive.
2.- It must be subjected to the law and what the law stipulates: 80% MUST BE from the local Market, the Rest CAN BE, but not necessarily NEED to be FOREIGNERS and IF then they need to suit the law.
and last but not least: Haiti also has a High demand for Working Force (!)
Why don't they take advantage of such a great opportunity and expose themselves to Risk (?)

I remember a fellow student in the university in the US, offered a high paying job, running a sweat garment factory in Haiti, and he put the offer to the class for opinions, and we all urged him including our professor, not to be part of an enterprise that exploited other human beings, no matter what the financial incentives where. He reconsidered and turned the job down.
The DR does not need the karma that brings exploiting the Haitians, and paying them measly salaries or none at all, in some cases. The DR needs to hire Dominicans, at better pay rates, and also stop postponing the mechanization of the agricultural and construction industries, once and for all.
The illegals must go back or be repatriated, and the Haitians that choose to stay and have a job, must regularize their residency status, and get official documents.
