SANTO DOMINGO.- A National District judge ordered the immediate release of the banker Leonel Almonte, convicted to 15 years in prison in the fraudulent collapse of the bank Banco Universal.

4th Criminal Court judge Awilda Reyes ruled for the restraining order filed by the banker against Justice minister Francisco Dominguez and prisons Director Mario Acosta, claiming contempt of court for defying San Cristóbal Sentencing judge José Ignacio Medrano’s decision to allow Almonte’s house arrest.

The judge had ordered the Justice Ministry and Prisons to pay a 5,000 peso fine for each day they fail to comply with the ruling.

Almonte, the main convict in the country’s first major bank collapse, will spend the nine years left in his sentence at his upscale Piantini sector residence.

Today was my first visit to the site after precisely one year hiatus.

I reflected upon this story a very long time and, frankly, already feel sick to my stomach. Just the kind of story that loudly reminds us of our Neanderthal political system and general state of lawlessness and lack of justice and integrity, the aggregate of which contributes to hold us back on the world stage and relegates us to a perpetual 3rd world status.

Yes, the metro, beautiful boulevards, tall towers and ubiquitous resorts are there, which give us an inflated sense of pride and accomplishment and maybe even some meaningless bragging rights; however, without justice and integrity there can be no real progress and, ultimately, there will be no peace.

After a year absence, I guess, the only real difference I see is the new president; however, judging by the company he keeps, perhaps that is no change at all; however, I'll reserve judgement for 100 days.

Confiscate all his assets, including " his upscale Piantini sector residence."
Take away every peso he still has and make sure the guy never enters a bank's lobby for the rest of his life.!

On a side note: Have the newly revamped anti corruption agency, investigate the judge responsible for the release, whoever he or she is.
