Santo Domingo.-  Three people missing and presumed dead, severe damages and more than 9,000 evacuated is the result of Tropical Storm Isaac’s pummelling of Dominican Republic’s southern coast.

The former mayor of the town of Villa Altagracia, Pedro Peralta, was swept away as he tried to cross the swelled Guananito river.

The Emergency Operations Center (COE) also reports  9,677 evacuated, 724 houses damaged and 75 communities cut off from the storm’s flooding.

The Meteorology Office forecasts continuing downpours from Isaac’s remnants.

Symbol of that great PLD construction and maintenance program of the last 12 out of 16 years!

Better to show some respect than putting comments like this Josean. Storms and hurricaneas destroy everywhere in the world bridges and houses, not only here. Easy to point to this or that... Do something!

No not for the Hurricanes, even YOU are not stupid enough to believe that, but for the 7x faulty built bridges and roads and the lack of Flood Control Planning!

So Danilo agrees with josean.........................No more Lie-onel Fernandez, Victor Diaz Rua and Felix Bautista, Steal the Money and run Patch Up Jobs until the next storm!

“Medina visits the area where collapsed bridge left incommunicado southern region”

"Danilo promised to the community of Las Carreras, contiguous to the collapsed bridge and the Ocoa River, that a retaining wall will be built along the entire banks of this area to protect it from floods of this river."

"He said that the SOLUTION to this bridge and others in the southern region shall be FINAL!"

Because you PURPLE Lie-onel FANATICS claim that between 1492 and 1996 nothing had been built in DR until the Messiah came walking on water out of the PLD.

In addition you numbnuts have said that Hippo built nothing in his 4 years!

So even if the Tainos built the bridge the rebuilding, the maintenance and the flood control planning in and around the bridges and rivers for 12 of the last 16 years have been the responsibility of the PLD and its Capo Lie -onel Fernandez!

i agree that we might not know who built the bridges that collapsed. however, you do not simply build bridges. you have to inspect them, periodically. maybe, at least once every 8 years. so, the Leonel administration might not have been responsible for building them, but it was their duty to ensure that they would not collapse under the weight of a Caribe Tours bus, killing all aboard.

Josean knows no limits when it comes to his obsession with the PLD. Dude, you lost your Hippo- Botella, and we understand your predicament. But taking an ACT of Nature and its destructive powers to have PLD leanings is yet another example for all to see that your medication isn't strong enough. Spare DT your rants and take your meds. Danilo 4 years, and then Margarita to give you 4 pelas corridas.

I am also disgusted with the comments of Josean and his accomplices ..there has been much hardship for many people here in the south but especially from the capital to the Haitian border and it is ridiculous trying to blame some government for all the problems of nature . The waves swept across el Malecon and the roads coming down from Ave Mexico into Zona Colnial were like waterfalls . Luckily , with the exception of some people in Villa Altagracia and around Bani the damage was not too bad ...all the authorities seemed to work well with very good control ...schools closed, shops closed, restaurants closed and everything done to make things safe as possible. I have not seen too many rooves lost nor trees overturned ..so this week is a clean up and I am sure all the workers would appreciate positive and thankful comments .
The Caribbean really was something to behold as it rushed against the coral rocks ..nature is awesome

Ricardolito, we are all aware that nature is a powerful master. that is not the question. what is your response to Josean's assertion, with which i concur, that bridges have to be periodically inspected for structural integrity? the little matter of maintenance is just as important as construction.

I have no evidence that they are not inspected ,,but there are many very old bridges here in the DR that are built in a way that water does overflow ....I suppose many years ago , and most of these bridges are more than 30 years old ..when they did not understand the need for proper infrastructure or how to borrow to immediately improve the infrastructure, they simply built in a way that was the most economical rather in a way that was the longest lasting .
Many bridges have to be replaced but if the government followed the advice of some on DT , they would never be able to do so ,,as the writers seem to think poorly of the infrastructure programmes and borrowing programmes of LF

No one has ever been against spending money on repairing or replacing necessary infrastructure such as bridges and roads. What people are offended by and totally against, is borrowing and spending on non-priority USELESS projects like the METRO that only serves a microscopic amount of the national population precisely when priorities such as EDUCATION and infrastructure that is truly needed throughout the country is abandoned when it comes to maintenance.

So nice try at trying spin this one Little Rickey but we are all familiar with your staged False sense of PURPLE indignation!

no Ricky. i just believe that money would have been better spent maintaining vital structures such as these old bridges, than building million dollar state of the art parking lots for UASD.

The METRO is functioning as normal . there was a desperate need for a car park at the USAD which is a free university and as for the hundreds of old low level bridges around the country , , on occasions they will fail against the enormous pressure of water washing along the sides ,,the design is simply not good enough for all those bridges to survive ...but I agree the over run on the university car park needed an audit

it is a free university, for people of lesser means. how many students of lesser means drive to school? why did it have to cost that much?from the pictures i see, it looks like something you would see in a Park Avenue condo.

Before the car park was built , it was impossible to find a car space around this huge university complex...it is also the same around the palacio de justicia and the office of the fiscal at present ...Something had to be done at that university to alleviate the problems so it was not an un necessary project but it certainly cost too much .As to the other point..I do not think there is any means test placed on applicants to this university ...

was that reported in the press, Josean? however, even if it was, do not be too hard on LF. after all, if you have a car, you should be able to park it in luxurious surroundings. Ricardolito seems to miss the point. maybe a parking lot was needed, because of the lack of spaces. i also need a watch, to tell me the time of day. that does not mean i should go out and buy a Rolex, when my financial situation dictates a Casio.

The true value of the Metro will be seen in the next decade and onward. Remember, that the system is not even 2/6 finished. And there'll be a rail connection from SD to Santiago, too. And yes, Medina is doing right by fulfilling the 4% of PIB mandate.

So we should have waited until the next decade, because the NATIONAL CRISIS is in EDUCATION not traffic jams in Santo Domingo; every second we wait we fall farther and farther behind in being EDUCATIONALLY COMPETITIVE with the rest of the world, we can't even hold our own in our backyard, Latin America!

you have to sympathize with poor Atabey. with the passing of time, it is probably beginning to dawn upon him that he is irrelevant. nobody takes him seriously. at least, in cases such as you and i, people either hate us, or like us, but they do not ignore us. in Atabey's case, nobody cares what he has to say, because they have already made up their minds that it is nonsense, anyway.
