Santo Domingo.- The BBC reports Wednesday that the local media consider the topics of the Catholic Church and the military “are generally avoided,” a view that also reveals foreigners’ widespread lack of knowledge of the country’s inner workings.
In the bbc.co.uk report ‘Dominican Republic profile’ the prestigious outlet affirms that “Ownership of TV channels, radio stations and newspapers is concentrated in a few economically or politically-powerful hands,” a statement which does mirror a reality.
It affirms that the country has several TV channels, many multichannel cable TV operators, more than 200 mostly commercial radio stations, and government-operated TV and radio networks.
“Press freedom is guaranteed by law and media outlets carry diverse political views. Some subjects, such as the Catholic Church and the army, are generally avoided.”
It adds that there were 4.6 million internet users by December 2011, including some 2.5 million Facebook users (Internetworldstats).
It mentions the press dailies El Caribe, Hoy, Listin Diario, El Nacional and Diario Libre; the television channels CDN, CERTV, Colorvision, Telemicro, Telesistema, Teleantillas, Antena Latina and Cadena de Noticias, and the Web outlets Dominican Today and DR1 as online news in English.

Yeah, nobody wants to mess with these two powerful institutions! As of now, they can't be touched, but it's just a matter of time before they can be dismantled and the pieces scattered far and wide.
We can benefit greatly from the suppression of these two parasites with no clear function but to oppress and burden the economy with their mere presence.
Danilo must reduce and reuse the armed forces... In a time of relative peace, the important remnants of this waste of money, can be put to good use in cleaning up our cities guarding our border, as a disaster relief agency and whatever else that does not involve criminal activity such as asking for bribes and abuse of power.
Simply ignore the church and tell the Cardinals to "stick it".!

I nearly always agree with your comments Ron Evans but on this occasion I think I would like to modify them ..The army and the church are two very long established institutions ...and many people , including myself. like to have a continuity of institutions , in their lives...these may be the police, the tennis or golf clubs , the political party or any institution .
What has happened is that the two institutions mentioned here , have become rotten and need urgent reforming so they suit modern society . The army in Thailand , formerly untouchable is now totally reformed and democratic and there are various christian churches that have also reformed themsleves and are thriving and capable of absorbing all sorts of attacks ,,,they have become more relevant.
It would be wonderful to see a slick Dominican Army , brought right down to size and a Catholic church that educated and cared for the people so their lives were enhanced and who kept out of bedroom issues !!!!!!!

This is the law of unintended consequences coming to fruition.
Lie-onel went gallivanting on his self-promotional junkets throughout the world on the Dominican taxpayer’s dime to satisfy his Napoleonic Ego. Apparently he Bull Shitted many people in the world with is slick rhetoric about modernity trying to sound like a sophisticate statements and look like big player on the international scene; he painted DR as a bastion of Modern Democracy. However, when people started following his actions at home they saw the inconsistency with international rhetoric.
This is documented in the Wiki-Leaks cables, where on the one hand he was giving lectures about the era of Coups being over in Latin American and then staining his Fruit of the Looms when the American Ambassador questioned him about not removing narco-corrupt generals; alleging they would overthrow him.

Also people saw his tailoring of the constitution to concentrate dictatorial type powers in the presidency as well as the subjugation of the Dominican court system to the executive branch; even further diminishing their judicial independence as a co-equal branch of government.
However what I really think what also brought attention to Lie-onel’s duplicitous rhetoric lying style and his house of cards down, was the Ban of abortion in all cases, codified in HIS constitution which was brought to world attention with the delay in treatment to "Esperansita."
“According to Reuters, a change in the constitution of the Dominican Republic in 2010 imposed a blanket ban on abortion in the country, even in circumstances where the mother's health or life was in danger. The Dominican Republic's powerful conservative lobbies backed by the influential Catholic Church were the main promoters of the country's stringent anti-abortion laws.”

Exactly my point, Ricardolito!..I'm not against the church, per se. What gets my goat is their hypocritical stance on moral issues. The church has taken to impose a ban on the use of contraceptives and abortions that is clearly a social issue that depends much on circumstances by which the pregnancies were conceived.
Personally I'm against abortion. I think it's despicable, especially after the first trimester. On the other hand, to bring up a child into this world that is unwanted and to suffer neglect and abuse, is just as despicable.
I believe that family planning is essential to every couple who decides to either have or not have a child. I believe that the greatest joy is to have an arrival at an optimum time when he/she can be best cared for...cont.

My dyspathy with the armed forces is that it is a luxury we can not afford. It is a total waste of resources and has outlived its' raison d'etre. It is a behemoth that is now a liability rather than a useful agency that could benefit our nation, in any way.
A huge army is a relic of the distant past when we needed defence from Haiti and/or stabilize our political arena.
The need is long past. It is time to tame the feral savages who prey on the public and intimidate the government.
I say; trim it, slim it, specialise it, gradually reduce it's ranks, and eventually, abolish it!

Hey Roy this one is for you:
"Cardinal Carlo Martini says Church '200 years behind"
Italian Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini has described the Roman Catholic Church as being "200 years behind" the times.
The cardinal died on Friday, aged 85.
Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera has published his last interview, recorded in August, in which he said: "The Church is tired... our prayer rooms are empty."
Martini, once tipped as a future pope, urged the Church to recognise its errors and to embark on a radical path of change, beginning with the Pope.
Thousands of people have been filing past his coffin at Milan's cathedral, where he was archbishop for more than 20 years.
The cardinal, who had retired from the post in 2002, suffering from Parkinson's Disease, is to be buried on Monday

'Old culture'
Martini, a popular figure with liberal stances on many issues, commanded great respect from both Pope John Paul II and his successor Pope Benedict XVI.
The cardinal - a member of the Jesuit religious order - was often critical in his writings and comments on Church teaching, says the BBC's David Willey in Rome.
He was a courageous and outspoken figure during the years he headed Europe's largest Catholic diocese, our correspondent says.
In his last interview, given to a fellow Jesuit priest less than a month ago and published the day after his death, the cardinal made sweeping criticisms of the Catholic Church.
Catholics lacked confidence in the Church, he said. "Our culture has grown old, our churches are big and empty and the church bureaucracy rises up, our religious rites and the vestments we wear are pompous."

Unless the Church adopted a more generous attitude towards divorced persons, it will lose the allegiance of future generations, the cardinal added. The question, he said, is not whether divorced couples can receive holy communion, but how the Church can help complex family situations.
And the advice he leaves behind to conquer the tiredness of the Church was a "radical transformation, beginning with the Pope and his bishops".
"The child sex scandals oblige us to undertake a journey of transformation," Cardinal Martini says, referring to the child sex abuse that has rocked the Catholic Church in the past few years.
He was not afraid, our correspondent adds, to speak his mind on matters that the Vatican sometimes considered taboo, including the use of condoms to fight Aids and the role of women in the Church.

In 2008, for example, he criticised the Church's prohibition of birth control, saying the stance had likely driven many faithful away, and publicly stated in 2006 that condoms could "in some situations, be a lesser evil".

Very interesting, Josean, thanks
However I think reform of the church will not save it, it will hasten it's demise. The church's authority, strength and power relies on it's unchanging dogma, the infallibility of the Pope and the inerrant word or god, the Holy Bible. Once they admit some of it is wrong, people will realize it is all wrong.
The Evangelical churches stick to fundamentalist Christian dogma and are going from strength to strength, filling their ever increasing number of mega-churches, their massive monetary reserves and political influence.
By contrast, the Anglican (C of E) Church has modernized, liberalized and some clergy have even admitted there is no God, yet they are now almost extinct.
