SANTO DOMINGO.- Ruling and opposition party lawmakers on Sunday called outrageous, unacceptable and baseless the UN’s Development Program ( UNDP) representative’s proposal to issue an amnesty for the hundreds of thousands of undocumented Haitians.

UNDP representative Valerie Juliand asked the Dominican government to grant an amnesty to allow the regularization of immigrants who’ve lived in the Dominican Republic for many years.

Chamber of Deputies president Abel Martinez said although Dominican Republic has done much for the Haitian people and will continue doing so, an amnesty proposal isn’t only far-fetched, but irresponsible and violates the most sacred principles of sovereignty. "Proposals such as these should be rejected by all the Dominican people."

For minor opposition PRDC party deputy Victor (Ito) Bisono, the country must comply with the regulations in the Immigration law, and those with enough merit for Dominican citizenship should be granted it.

"Every country in the world has their own laws, international agreements and enforce them, there should be neither scandals nor pressure from isolated statements or foreigners. What you need to have is authority, integrity, consistency and compliance with the law."

Damn well done, next they should give this UN do gooder a tour of shanty slums, illegal labor job sites and ask not, what we can do for Haiti but what they have/can do for themselves and the Greater Hispanola; further, take a tour of deforested regions and charcoal manufacturing and export.

To better get a grasp of the situation, perhaps we should invite US lawmakers and Inmigration Officers to the shantytowns, houses of ill repute and federal prisons in US territories to evaluate the psyche of the whordes of Dominican citizens that inhabit these areas.

Maybe they'll think twice next time persons of this ethnic origin ask for a visa or a presidential inmigration amnesty law is passed.

The law should be applicable to all in equal measure...

US territory...that means you don't have a say on anything, you can't deport anyone.

As US citizens, not only do we deport illegals, we fine and jail those that have been found in violation of the law previously.

My suggestion; resist the urge to flaunt your ignorance...

You mean the GRINGOS or Estado-Unidense that have the authority in its Colonies known as territories, who controls the Federal Courts.
With all that rehtorics ,you still can't vote for the US president as long as you remain"A COLONY"

Why don't we start giving amnesty to all those illegals in the USA that adds up to 12 millions?
I guess the UN does not sees that because the UN is located in NYC.

If the US wants Haitians so much, why doesn't it take at least 1.5 million of those in DR instead of pushing them to us in DR? .The USA takes Cubans in Fl but refuses to take Haitians. Is it their
color that frightens them ?If it so they could always do as they have done before and put them in a boat and send them to Monrrovia,Liberia as they did once before,in the 1800.

You err brachly in your commentary thus showing either crass ignorance of the matter you porport to know or a childish display of tantrums.

The federal courts in Puerto Rico are constituted by Puerto Ricans (I used to work there). The same goes for the vast majority of federal agents that intercept drugs and illegals (usually found together).

As Puerto Ricans we are born US citizens. Should we want to vote for the president, we need only live in any of the 50 states.

As a US colony, we have the highest generalized standard of living in the Caribbean. (Unlike the DR)

The Haitian problem is an Hispanolan one. Your team should unite with the Haitian team and terminate the ethnic cleansing you and your current racist government pursue.

As a common race (Dominicans and Haitians), you should thrive. After all, being black is a terrible thing not to embrace...

Sure you have the highest standard of living among the Spanish speaking with the exception of

Chile because you are a welfare Colony not even a State. As a Colony you have the right of uncle

Sam's protectiion, also known as a protectorate. You have no Army, air force,or navy that you can

cosider your own. Nor can you control your foreign affars and as you mentioned before you were

hired by the US to protect your border and illicit drugs coming into PR.

So why don't you become independent? I will answer that because you have it too good as it is,or

become a State of the Union ? then you would have to pay taxes that you are not paying now.

As to compare us with Haiti its culture and race i think you went a bit too far,if you see lots of them

now in DR it is because it was pushed on to us by the USA instead of sending them all to PR

having the highest standard of living

Like John Lennon said - "All we are saying, is give peace a chance"...

I am all for becoming a state. Being a fully integrated member of the US economy is a great responsibility and one that separates the men from the boys.

There are others that think that we would be better off as an independent state. As an example of what would certainly happen here if that were a reality let's take Cuba, who cannnot survive without welfare from large economies and whose people are constantly trying to escape their fascist regime - that is why they blame the US for their economic mishap - the famous embargo. Are they not free to engage in economic activity with the rest of the developed world?

There are yet others who are the product of mismanagement of federally sponsored economic transition programmes who have disdain for all things american except for the monies coming down the federal aid pipeline. It is these creatures of entitlements who conform the majority of the commonwe

althers you probably perceive most Puerto Ricans as.

Haitians are in the DR territory because the Dominican elite benefits from them. They work in the sugarcane fields, clean the streets of SD, and do most of the hard labour in the construction industry (among others). They are performing the jobs that most dominicans find themselves above of. They are already an integral part of the Dominican lifestyle.

What is unfathomable is that Haitian descendants born in the DR are being treated like foreigners. In the US and all it's territories, any person born, to any citizen or illegal alien, is a US citizen. Why can't this hold true to the Haitians in the DR? Are they unfit to become part of your legal constituency? Do you consider Dominicans a race above Haitians? (like the german white supremacist movement of the Hitler days)

If you want to do something for the Haitian people, start by treating them as equal human beings in an island called Hispanola.

You are correct on what you just said about the Haitians doing all the hard work in DR. Partly
because of cheap labor, whose practices were learned by us from the USA treating the Mexican
illegal as a 2nd class citizens and exploiting them, as well as the PUERTO RICANS In answer
to your last sentence , As if we want to do something for the Haitians, start treating them as equal.
Did the US ever treat PR as equal?did the US ever treat the Mexicans as equal or for that matter
any Central or So American Country with the exception of Chile,Argentina,Uruguay,Brazil.The.C.A.
countries were nothing but bannana Republics.Secondly Dominicans are not a race but a nationality so are the Haitians. If you ever learned the History of the two countries then you will know why,but first You would have to learn HOSTO'S biography and see why.His remains will stay in DR untill PR becomes a free nation

As to the Cuban embargo you were probably too young to remeber. The Cubans abroad wanted to get rid of Fidel in any way they could ,so there comes a slick US HR for NJ named TORRICELLI, and that became to be known as Torricelli's embargo. He was bribed by the Cuban American
to press on such embargo of course for a price which ended costing him the HR after 20 yrs.
To start with you could choke a nation if you interfere with their commerce which we did in Cuba's case and been an Island it had to sell and buy goods abroad, The US and its international sphere of influence choked the Island and that is why you called it a welfare State when all had to be rationed out to its people. It did not work after 50 years Fidel in power and the US had no influence on the USSR so Fidel took advantage of it since we were going to invade Cuba he called in the Soviets. I know since I was in the US army then. The rest is history.

As to Cubans illiteracy ratio is one of the lowest in the entire Latin American countries including PR. Sure he was a Dictator ,but how else are you going to dominate a spoilled Maffia nation as it
was in the Cuban's situation. Havana to the Gringos was like saying Las vegas now days or better,Prostitution as well as pimps since it was legal. The Gringos did not think twice on spending the w/e at a Cuban resort and charge it to business expences.
He is or was a dictator but so was Trujillo to benefitt its own pockets left there after the invasion of
1914-1928 when he took over and paid the international debts by 1936 of US$14 millions,so were
all those like Somoza in Nicaragua and Batista in Cuba.
Nevertheless as a dictator as he was/is Cuba has the most professionals in LA. They have good
relations with the rest of the European community.

Jeanarenas,
With all due respect, just because USA practices ¨jus soli¨ it doesn´t mean is the world standard. Moreover, It is very noble that you want to help in the plight of the poor Haitian people, but please don´t volunteer us as the solution. If you want to help, then help them. Don´t try to guilt us, or shame us, into it.

Some one had to put down a COLONIAL from opinionating on something that does not concern him. As arcangel96 just ponted out to him,"unless you are willing to help don't put your 5 cents in" Also some one has to remind him who they are and their status in society among free States.

airogordo;

To reafirm my statement above last week another boat-load of Cubans just hit Fl coast w/o been
detected by the US Coast Guard. Maybe they were told hands off. Had they been Haitians or Dominicans the USCG in person would had put them back to their country of origen.
Furthermore they were taken to a US Hosptal by the USCG to make sure they were ok.
You know why all these preferences and privilege are shown? The answer ls Fed.Senator from NJ,Robert Menendez as well as 2 more from Fl.and Marcos Rubio who almost got elected as running mate for the Rep Party plus a lots more in national Politics.Point one out among the DR or Haitians, therefore we have no representation as a community.
