Santiago, DR.– Two men from Santiago were reportedly lynched for stealing three cell phones and $10,000 pesos (US$250), Listin Diario reported.

According to the paper, six men attempted to rob Norbeto Filpo's home in Guyacanal. The men were known to the community as trouble makers and had committed other robberies.

Two of them were caught by some residents and were beaten and then shot to death before the police arrived. They were identified as Ruben Almonte and Richard Perez Capellan.

One of the alleged robbers, Oscar Manuel Luciano (aka El Sureñito), 18, was arrested by police agents.

Hey Josean, this is something has been done over here for over 100 years and now you want to blame Leonel, in the USA and especially in Florida you have the right to kill anyone that enters your home or in the streets if you feel that your life is in danger, so is done in VA, TX and other states, and now you Josean wants to say that Leonel is to blame. Dude you need to get a life. Why do you hate Leonel so much, because he came from a pour barrio to be the president of this country for 3 terms and also because he managed to split your PRD party into 2, Hipolito el Burro and Miguel the bright business man. Leonel is good he took the PRSC and now the PRD is in the situation that it is and they all blame Leonel. What a bunch LOSERS INCLUDING YOURSELF.

good show! now need to do more. Street thugs are just that when confronted they act like school children and cry and beg mercy. Justice is served by the people who have to endure this daily, the police ride on the main roads with the lights flashing but not down the darken streets where the robber roam. Ask any cab driver where the areas robbers are then ask if they ever see a Police presence

That's the point the people don't want to understand if the people on the top steal and don't provide education to the masses, the young untutored mob will emulate them and steal indiscriminately as well.

No matter how much people want to put their head in the sand until we address education we are spinning our development wheels!

Let me tell you something that you probably do not know. There are over three Millions illegal Haitians taking away the scarce opportunities to the Dominican people with their cheap labor that was once done by Dominican people paid with decent wage. Now do the math and include this problem also to why the 18% unemployment rate.

Roy, you are on point!. This is just uncivilized, cruel, and despicable. These thieves needed to be arrested and prosecuted accordingly. This is just first degree murder and those responsible are criminals; these animals must pay for these crimes. Once again, another clear indication of the state of anarchy, lack of civility and lawlessness prevalent in the DR.

Absolutely!!! The real litmus test will be the arrest and prosecution of those who executed the alleged robbers. Only then will people believe that the social fabric has begun to turn toward a brighter future.

I wonder how philosophical the above haters would be if it was their kid brother who'd been murdered at the hands of this criminal mob.

Look: the people of the RD have been beaten down. There can be no doubt of that. But comments venerating the thug mentality does nothing to help. I fear things may get worse before they get better. Losing one's faith in the system often equates to a very long path to recovery.

I am totally amazed at all the ex-pats who have nothing much to offer than contempt. If you know the solution, then why not go home and help?

And I am surely disappointed with the Editors of DT for allowing this knd of hate disguised as "freedom of expression or free speech". Hate is hate. And the empty can makes the most noise.

originalmrb,

I agree with your statements with the exception of the one I have quoted above. I understand your frustration at those barbaric actions; and the frustration and feeling of impotence of the average Dominican citizen with crime and those who in engage in them. However, the way to fight hate
speech is with more Free Speech not less, just like you did in your excellent commentary.

If we suppress speech, then both the indifferent to crime corrupt government officials, who have 24 hour security and live in fortress homes, as well as, the untutored mobs who perpetrated the crimes and the ones who overreact violently, win.

The people who should win are YOU and the millions of others who are the sensible majority.

Dominican Republic, the most dangerous country in the world :: Dominican Watchdog

For the past few weeks, though, Graham has been blogging about what he calls the most dangerous country in the world: the Dominican Republic.

Graham was troubled that he’d heard of eight different people who’d been killed there, but he didn’t seem overly concerned.

Then in March, as Graham sat in his bed on the second floor of a hotel in Luperon, a man climbed onto his balcony, entered his room with a broken rum bottle and threatened to kill him if Graham didn’t give him money.

Graham gave the robber 6,000 pesos, about $150, and as soon as he got the chance unlocked the three locks on his door and jumped into the hallway, where he started to yell for help.

Haiti4Ever,

Arguably there may be some vulnerable Haitians, but I doubt any are venerable. According to Wikipedia:

"Before a person is considered to be venerable, he or she must be declared as such by a proclamation, approved by the Pope, of having lived a life that was "heroic in virtue" – the virtues being the Theological Virtues of faith, hope, and charity and the Cardinal Virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance."

Oh and for your information Haiti is not an island. It is the western third of the island of Hispaniola, the eastern two-thirds being the Dominican Republic. It is easy to recognize the boarder - there are no trees on the Haitian side.

Yes, Josean,

At the taxpayers' expense, to protect him from justifiably irate taxpayers.

Maybe you need to explain to your niece about the difference between "paying for security" and "paying protection money". The rainforests may be disappearing but the rule of the jungle still applies in the Dominican Republic it seems.
