my English teacher said she was attacked and robbed while in D.R a long time ago. She said she will never go back. Shameful people, all they care about is themselves, they don't care about families or the worsening of the economy in their country.
From: United States
actually , donniet, with the risk of stating the obvious, let me say that people encounter bad events everywhere in the world. that is cold comfort to your teacher, but is the reality of how life works. that having been said, the crime in the DR is getting worse, with no foreseeable reduction. it is sad. it will chase away foreign investment, and that will screw the pooch.

This is what happens in a consumer oriented society. The have nots see what the have got and decide they want it too, but lack access to the resources that would allow the have nots to get it and therefore resort to crime. The lack of socio-economic opportunities and upward mobility, plus consumer demand for goods and services created by the commercial/marketing system, where before it was non-existent to a population which lacks purchasing power. You combine that with the break down of family, lack of ethics, explains that we are experiencing what is a simple matter of moral decay. Regardless of the political environment and contrary to what Josean constantly hails, it is not the PLD or PRD who are directly at fault, there are other forces at work, namely our eroding system of values in the DR and the world.
From: United States
very litte that i can add to that, guillermone. when you have a country in which 42% of the population lives in poverty, and they see guys with Maseratis, they get upset. i went to a restaurant, a few weeks ago, and a prominent local politician walked in, with his wife, and 4 kids. EVERYONE in the party at his table had a Samsung Galaxy 111. him, his wife, and 4 kids. nobody spoke to anybody else. everybody dicking around with this electronic toy. 35 grand , apiece.the average joe sees these things when he goes to Claro to buy a 1000 peso cellphone. when he sees your 12 year old kid with a Galaxy, what do you think is going to go through his mind?

Exactly Dread, exactly.............that is precisely the point. I also lived in New England for some years and the WASPs mentality in that region of the US regardless of socio-economic status projected a low key image of themselves and never flaunted wealth.
If you look at the very expensive homes in the Cape Cod. most are plain and unassuming. And additionally, natives tend to have a strong work ethic and hold a strong sense of social responsibility where individuals feel an obligation to act in benefit of society at large.
Nevertheless, as times have changed, although still relatively low, crime rates in the Cape are on an upswing, which simply reflects a shift in norms. Nevertheless, the point remains, it is always a good idea and wise never to eat a steak in front of a hungry lion.

Guillermone, the problem will really become drastic when the drug mafia and the street element forge a pact. what will happen is that the drug element will have the money to help the poor, and the poor will see them as heroes. then, you will get Jamaican style garrison society. the public will protect their saviors. they will obstruct the police efforts to apprehend people they know to be criminal element. then, vigilante style protection becomes the only salvation, because the cops are wrapped up in bed with the gangstas.the public cannot rely on the appointed police, and look to take matters in their own hands.. everyone will be armed to the teeth, each with a bigger gun than the next guy.. it is not pretty, let me tell you.

No comfort, since everything says that the cops are just as likely to be these violent robbers. I have to drive from Las Americas into the city pretty soon, close to midnight, and I wish I could rent a loaded .45 at the airport at the same time. The police have obviously done nothing 4 years and years, so gunning down a couple of these means absolutely nothing when it comes to the safety of the city sons and tourists.
