Santiago.- Prominent Santiago attorney Ramon Antonio (Negro) Veras yesterday confirmed the reports that a personality approached him to propose he form part of a band of hecklers and stage “popular trials” against former president Leonel Fernandez, but that he flatly refused.

"I told him that I wasn’t the right person because I had a sense of gratitude for the consequential Leonel had from the Government in the case of my son Jordi," Veras said in reference to the shooting which severly injured and nearly killed his son.

The prominent lawyer and columnist said anyone who wants action against Fernandez  can do so as they see fit, but not to count on him.

In that regard, Veras noted that he and his family are grateful to the former president. He said he’s not “two-faced”  because the two have established a friendship.

Newspaper Listin Diario yesterday reported that prominent personalities in various cities had been recently contacted by leaders of various opposition groups to form part of the so-called "popular trials" against Fernandez.

Quoting sources close to the movement, the daily said influential personalities were creating committees in the provinces to spearhead a "minitribunal" to promote " popular trials"against alleged unlawful actions or corruption in the previous administration.

The strategy, Listin reports, is to organize groups of agitators to heckle Fernández at public events, once the "trials" start in the towns.

I am not sure that I'm familiar with this form of assembly. Is this a protest in effigy? Is the intention to disrupt further public speech and therefore dissuade anyone from featuring this man in their events, and ultimately cause him to lose a source of personal revenue?

If this - in fact - is the intent, then I'm surely familiar with that sort of protestation.

This is a legitimate question based in curiosity. I'm not being sarcastic. It's the word "trial" which is throwing me off, and I'm wondering if this is a cultural euphemism unique to the RD or Latin countries in general. I really want to understand and to be more educated in the matters of other nations.

Super, you're not alone in this circumstance.

Globally, one has to ask one's self: Why aren't all those who committed the frauds - which caused the financial collapse in the US - serving time? Why aren't the money changers in the EU up on charges instead of getting bailouts and walking free? Where are all the monies donated by the world's citizens for the Haitian Earthquake aid, and why aren't it's custodians under pressure to justify why it's not being spent? How can all these 3rd party phone centers get 80 cents on every dollar collected for charity with Impunity?

There are 3 types of people in the world; Those who make things happen. Those who watch things happen. And those who wonder what happened. The majority of people fall into the latter.

You, as a citizen have every right to complain and show disgust. Just make sure that you do it armed with dispassionate intellect. People have fallen into a Rumpelstiltskin style of protestation and no one listens to that.
