Santo Domingo.- Hundreds of people walked to the National Palace on Sunday to ask president Danilo Medina to halt the open pit mining by the Canadian company Xstrata-Falcondo at Loma Miranda, Central Mountains.
The protesters who set out from Independencia park, also demanded a halt to mining in other areas of Dominican Republic’s Central Mountains, the source of most of the country’s rivers.
Presidency Deputy chief of staff Henry Molina received a commission representing the protersters in the National Palace, where they delivered a document addressed to the President.
"The President has instructed the President’s Chief of Staff to receive every Dominican who has a grievance or for any action. The president will proceed to convey these documents to each pertinent agency for study and give his opinion as responsible leaders do," Molina said.
deplore permissions
In the document, read by Commission spokesman Domingo Abreu, the organizations note that there are 200 mining sites in the Central Mountains, the highest in the Caribbean. "It’s something to shock even the least sensitive conscience."

This protest action is good as long as it remains nonviolent. The people are marching in the path of the Arab spring and the time has come for the politicians to take notice and act upon what the people want and desire; the way it should be.

Ingle 23 YOU ARE CORRECT. The X LF has created this 100 times over. He allowed the sell off and was the beneficiary. I do not believe Danilo will take the issue seriously until it is too late. He cannot and that is why I was not in favor of another PLD Presidency.
The natural resources are being destroyed and we must do whatever it takes. Quisqueya is in ruins but there can be change. Where is the money from the deal with Barrick Gold. If there were not treasures of great value these companies would not be in Quisqueya. Where is the money it should be for the pueblo?

This imported "genious" is another one (arrogant and top-loaded with Haitian human excrement); I will run a "bolo" to see if he is wanted anywhere. The jobs generated by these multi-national greedy foreigners are very limited. For the most part these “gold diggers” bring their own sub-contractors (specialized mining equipment and personnel) to support these efforts.
The money pay to the DR goes straight into the “Dominican treasury”, which translate “to end up in the hands of those in power”. Some small Dominican companies are employed by these entrepreneurs’ vultures. Often times these companies are hire without going to the required bidding process; consequently you will see the same embezzlement monopoly life cycle, over and over again.

"Miranda has its defenders"
Hundreds of people, including prominent environmentalists, university professors, and community and union leaders, held a huge march in Santo Domingo yesterday, Sunday 16 September from Independence Park to the Presidential Palace, as part of a campaign for the government to refuse permission for the exploitation of a ferro-nickel deposit in Loma Miranda. The Loma Miranda is in the center of the watershed of the Yuma-Camu Rivers, which feed the Rincon and Hatillo reservoirs.
A delegation representing the demonstrators met with the Deputy Minister of the Presidency, Henry Molina.

The official said that President Medina was committed to finding an answer to the requirements of the sectors that feel that their rights have been violated. "The President will issue the document to everyone involved and will give an answer, like responsible Presidents do, to the citizens," he promised.
Molina revealed that he had been instructed to listen to the demands of the citizens who are fighting for the common good. In his efforts to be cordial, and as a symbolic act of his openness the official offered bottles of water to the demonstrators whose clothes were soaked in sweat.

There was not enough water to go round and the official apologized to the group, to which Luis Carvajal, one of the demonstrators and a well-known environmentalist, told him:
"Listen to me, what we want is for the water not to disappear in the Central Mountains. What we want is for the water from Loma Miranda to be guaranteed, that we prevent damage to the water of the Hatillo Dam by Barrick Gold, and that the other mining concessions like Uni-Gold in Restauracion or in San Juan de la Maguana do not endanger the country's water supply. There has to be water!"
Their protest is particularly aimed at the concessions the Fernandez administration granted to exploitation in Loma Mala (Monsenor Nouel), Sierra de los Siete Picos (Monte Plata) and Unigold (Dajabon).
