Santo Domingo.- The Consumer Protection Agency (Proconsumidor) yesterday warned of sand in sugar from Brazil, which is being sold in the country since July.
It said the Health Ministry notified the Dominican company, Casa Chepe SRL, which imported it, to recall the sugar brand "Canaria" from store shelves, because it’s not safe for consumers. It said the company agreed to te measure.
In a statement, Proconsumidor said after receiving at least 15 complaints from consumers and merchants on the tainted sugar, determined that it contained the insoluble materials silicon dioxide, calcium carbonate (sand) and cellulose fibers. "Silica is a common name for a compound of silicon and oxygen, a component of sand, disintegrated rock particles."
Proconsumidor said 14,000 metric tons were imported two months ago and were being sold since.

Brazil can produce moré than enough Sugar for the whole world ....this sounds like a local scam of valué added
From: United States, Vivir sin Patria, es lo mismo que vivir sin Honor.
Why are we importing sugar from Brazil when we can produce enough for national consumption? Man! We have enough resources to be self sufficient when it comes to sugar, rice and dairy products, but the government imports these products…
I just don’t get it..

It appears to be a dumping scheme to get rid of unwanted sugar. It seems (assumption) the vendor in (Brazil) unable to sell it elsewhere knowingly unloaded the tainted product on the "unsuspecting" Dominicans because they know Dominican standards and enforcment of standards is lax. The transaction stood out like a sore thumb, importing sugar into a country that exports sugar. Dumb !

Agree with Zooma. This was a dumping scheme and the Dominicans involved should be put in jail.

If it is from Brazil, look for a Lionel connection, I suspect he and spouse have big back handed dealings with Brazillian companies. Finally why on earth do the Dominicans need to import sugar, perhaps we can take the sand out and add it to the beaches.

Until the people in DR revolt and change their govt you will always have other countries making money off of you and stealing your resources. A visa to the US is not the solution but many Dominicans dream is to leave, make money in the US and come back to visit like chopos.

Leo probably does have a hand in it. however, the DR does not produce enough sugar for local demand, and for export. so, what it does is to sell the unrefined sugar to the US, and import the sand from Brazil.

"It was Casa Chepe who informed the authorities about the irregularity with that shipment of sugar." Casa Chepe provided Pro consumer the lab report showing the condition of the sugar when their officials came to our office on August 23. "In the documents we presented to Pro consumer on that day evidence was given that sales of sugar containing insoluble stopped and the sugar had already been withdrawn from the market."
