Perhaps the Vietnam War drained the US economy and their appetite for involvement in other countries if they could avoid it. Only in the case of so called vital interests - Panama did the US try invasion again - although there were always covert operations.
Everyone remembers the invasion of Panama in 1989 ; the arrest and imprisonment of Noriega; the mass burial on Xmas day and the lies and disinformation spread by the US.
