SANTO DOMINGO.- The Environment Ministry Wednesday afternoon announced it seized 1,500 sacks of charcoal and destroyed several furnaces ready for burning wood in Barahona, Bahoruco and Independencia provinces.

It said 55 people, two Dominicans and 53 Haitians were arrested at a campsite with 70 huts and charged with damaging the Jaragua National Park and other protected areas.

It said among those arrested were the group’s ringleaders Francisco Matos and Gerardo Cuevas Peña, and seized a 12 gauge shotgun, 26 machetes, two "zip guns," four axes, three hoes and same number of hammers, among other objects.

In a statement, Environment said it escorted the Haitians to the Immigration Dept. at Pedernales and the Dominicans are being held by the province’s judicial authorities.

Also confiscated was a large amount of tree trunks which were to be used to make charcoal.

The arrests were the result of raids by Environmental Protection (SENPA) and Border Security (CESFRONT) agents, as well as Dominican Air Force airmen.

How can we make any progress when they are handing over the charcoal loving Haitians to the Haitian authorities? Expect them all back by next week doing the same thing.
These people should be lock up for years and force to plant trees and other labors.

As for the Dominican scumbags, we should HANG 'EM! Let's make an example for others to see that our precious eco system is the lifeline of our country, therefore you do not destroy it.

Escorted them back to the immigration department? Is this for real? DT is putting us on.
There was a time not long ago than those caught cutting trees for charcoal where given immediate "ley de fuga" on site, no questions asked.
These bastards and SOB's should be arrested and be forced to plant trees for the rest of their lives, on a chain gang.
This really pisses me off big time, now we will have the pitis claiming discrimination and racism.

Chris back in the 60's our leader on the east side understood that our forrest needed to be protected for the survival of our land. He created the first national park and many other after that. Put the agriculture dept in charge of our forestry. He gave free stove to the poor with subsidies natural gas. At the same time passed a drastic law including making it ilegal the cutting down of tree for comercialization. And if you needed to cut down a tree because of an emergency you needed a permision in writing by the government. If you venture yourself to cut a tree you were risking your life. That is how we mantained our ecology and the other side did not because they lacked leader. I understand your point of view that they will come to our side. At the same time we can stop them if the government decide to do it. That is where we come pressuring our government to do something fast.

Do like the Romans in ancient times and crucify all of them on the highway going back to the border,
that kind of treatment is the only thing that will stop them.

I think perhaps the headline reads a bit misleading.

"It said 55 people, two Dominicans and 53 Haitians were arrested at a campsite with 70 huts and charged with damaging the Jaragua National Park and other protected areas."

Hmmmm.....two Dominicans. Could they be the bosses who hired all of the Haitians to produce this? Is this any different than Central Romana...hiring 1,000s of Haitians to do the work?

I think the focus should be on the 2 Dominicans...the so called "ringleaders". The workers were likely doing so for pennies a day...and the 2 Dominicans making all the profit.

Just my thoughts reading between the lines.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (defend.ht) – The 2011 Human Rights Report by the U.S. State Department found that even as the government changed from Preval to Martelly, corruption “remained widespread in all branches and at all levels of government” where “officials often engaged in corrupt practices with impunity.” According to the Chairman of the Port-au-Prince Bar Association, the 2012 report looks to be even worse.

The U.S. State Department report took note of the involvement of the Ministry of the Interior in the previous election as it financed the campaigns of at least a dozen candidates and paid salaries to another 10 sitting members of parliament.

When you Haitians brought your cholera to DR,a Haitian was caught taking a dump in a canal on the country side in San Juan De La Maguana.

What That " Haitian " is doing on that Heap

That s how charcoal is made
It has to be covered under a lot of dirt and wood

Because you are an Australian , it maybe a strange thing to you , because you re from a rich country ,where electricity is 24 hours , but older Australians might know of this technique , charcoal in Haiti is very good and these guys have been doing it that way since it came to existence .

They do that also because of the electricity issue 90% of women in Haiti wash their clothes by hands , imagine insufficient electricity and you have a washing machine using high voltage , plus there s the buying the washer and dryer in (US dollars ) making less than a US dollar in some cases a day
One American dollar is now 40 Haitian Gourdes and just in the Mid 1980 s one US dollars was jsut 5 Gourdes it was always that way until the departure of BabyDoc .

You can actually buy a few items with that $1 dollar , what they do is they buy rice , peas tomatoes ,to make the sauce , favors as for drinks water or they might squeeze some oranges or limes or other fruits like Sops , pineapple etc.... And at night they woukd drink porridges or in the morning with coffee witch they make , but of course not all Haitians live that way a high number , don't forget there s the diaspora sending them money each month for example if you get 100 American dollars sent to you ,it's a nice little money because you could actually do quite a lot with it , not extremely a lot but its nice to have there you can even pay school fees for your child (r en) . Put gas in your car if have one
Just an example .

Haiti4Ever,

Thank you for the explanation. However it seems odd that the guy is continuing with the process of making illegal charcoal with two armed soldiers watching.

I don't think Dominicans (or anyone for that matter) make fun of people being poor, hungry and desperate. They make fun of people pretending to to be rich (although they do it too) and don't want to be dragged down further by Haiti's poverty, unhealthy habits (spreading Cholera and HIV) and environmental vandalism.

Its not enough of an eye opener for these backward idiots to see what devastation continueing ancient african practices over 300 yrs old has done to the Haitian landscape, they gotta come to our country to do some more environmental damage. Turning them over to immigration is premature, they should serve jail time working on a chain gang planting trees for 2 yrs then be turned over to immigration. The 2 Dominicans if they were the ring leaders should get 5 yrs.

Its time we get serious with these illegal trespassers. All they are bringing to our country is the shit they expel and the contamination it produces. Any more of these beings caught taking a dump in our rivers should be charged with attempted homicide by illegal excrement and jailed for 5 yrs.
We can start a new construction boom with Dominican workers only to house all Haitian inmates.

Haiti is better known around the world than the Dominican Republic - not for its successes, but for its spectacular failures. In the hands of you and your ancestors, Haiti has regressed from being the richest colony in the Western Hemisphere to being the poorest, most corrupt country, even before the earthquake, which has given you billions of "pity" dollars from around the world, still with nothing to show for it.

@Trinitario809

Speaking of NGOs , did you know besides Haiti , India is the top NGO nation in the world and how much that has helped in development , can you compare how rich India has gotten and how rich India is and has been , compare to yours .
NGOs are doing a great job in Haiti , you cl0wns don t even know how much work is being done in Haiti right now , we know people are fleeing Haiti still, those are desperate people who cannot wait anymore and don't believe it will work out and most t are uneducated
NGO is a good thing for Haiti right now for development , people will always complain , no matter what
Even the UN as opposed to some Haitians are doing tremendous tasks in the rebuilding effort .

People will never be satisfied regardless of government , there will always be protests.

As I said it is always somebody else's job to heal Haiti, because you Haitians are incapable of nothing.
Besides NGOS also make lots of money on the process.

NGO s in Haiti because we can't do anything ourselves , did you do it yourself ?

You got lucky first it started with Tourism since we Haitians next door to you were the king in Tourism ,
Because of that your county unlike Cuba got a piece of the Action , than Jamaica in the 1970 s got o be number one in the region .

But Haiti and Cuba were kings

So you got a little money each year from tourism ,and build little by little and got better off , big deal ,Haiti won't need to go tru that route fortunately
And pr0s...TI...tu..TI.0n and dr...ugs got you more money and from there you kicked off

Trinitario809. as entertaining and funny as a "conversation" with that troll can be, you must stop feeding it... It lives off any attention given to it and will never know when to shut up or respond with anything but insults and verbal diarrhea..

But by all means if your having fun and enjoying the stupidity coming back to you .. then go for it...

By me posting this , but just to remind the hyp0crites that its been posted many times against Haitians , yet no one will stop and say , no don't say that or do that to other people , that's the way hyp0crites function

Just returning the favor and I am not the only one keep it up , the news may not be in your fav0r one day .

L00k at this one any which way , because it will eventually be one way or another
Haitians who sympathize with other Haitians for not b0yc0tting that land hear it from some us online t00, since m0st of them don't know these things are going on online .

Some don't think that the guy they just pass by on the street 5 minutes ago is heading home behind a computer and do that , they see him as just a passers by , me as long as you re a d0minican I have something agai snt you aut0matically though I do know that there is still that little doubt in the back of my head that still tells me that guy/ girl is ok .
