Santo Domingo.- The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Wednesday suggested that the Dominican government bolster the macroeconomy, confront the global economy’s risks and implement significant tax changes.

It forecast however that the economy will continue to grow at 4% this year and the next.

In a statement issued in Washington after the nine day visit by the mission led by Przemek Gajdeczka, the IMF said the government exceeded the projected the deficit of 2% of the GDP to 3.3%, in the first half of the year.

"The macroeconomic outlook for the near term is a challenge for the authorities, reflecting the need to strengthen the macroeconomic framework, including in particular to significantly adjust the fiscal position, and face the risks of the global economy,” the statement says.

The IMF's visit sought toreview the economy and lay the groundwork for the Article IV consultation and the monitoring program.

The delegation members met with President Danilo Medina, senior officials, private sector representatives and labor union leaders.

Gajdeczka said the economy has slowed this year and inflation has declined, while fiscal and external positions remain weak.

The 3.8% growth in the first half was paced by agriculture, retail sales and tourism, while annual inflation to August was 2.2%, below 5.5% + / - 1% below the specified inflation target.

"The fiscal situation has deteriorated in the first half while the sale of the Dominican National Brewery boosted extraordinary revenue. Higher costs however, including electricity subsidies, led to a consolidated public sector deficit of 3.3% of GDP in June 2012 (compared with the annual target of around 2% of GDP in the original budget).

Dear Smart Josean,

Without taxes no progress ( and no i am not a socialist ).

Without taxes no education program

Without education program no progress

Etc.

I live in a country which is within the top 3 regarding general taxes and number 1 regarding taxes on labour. BUT education and all other things are also excellent here. 75 years ago, this was a poor country ( not comparing to dominican republic standard ! )

Note: I know that you first have to have the possibility to earn some money before you even can pay taxes

Just want to say, taxes are inevitable for welfare and prosperity - if used judiciously

And that is the problem.

Why will the government suddenly use our money judiciously?

And why is that?...I'm no economist, but it seems clear that the biggest culprits in our deficit are the 12.000.000 million dollars spent everyday in the purchase of oil; the parasitic armed forces with their hundreds, do nothing, illiterate generals, and the many botellas that mostly encumber the running of our government.....No, the answer is to clean house and reduce oil imports. Certainly not, raising taxes on those that haven't enough to live on.
Lets cut our expenses and live within our means. It would make for a happier, healthier, and saner nation.

My sentiments exactly. But these clowns, who endlessly bark against all things PLD, seldom take the moment to think is WHY nations and countries have advanced past 3rd World levels of destitution. What Josean, Juanb, et alia FAIL to realize is that their argument feeds seamlessly into the traditional elite's intransigence against paying for modernity and development for all of society. Taxes are a necessary component in DR's drive

Or did he just re-discover the New world?

Could you show us where anyone above has said taxes aren't needed ?

I do think most are talking about the way they are used, or should I say misused, not payed or have right offs for those that don't need them......

We have a public service payroll larger than Colombia’s, who has a population 4 x plus ours of!

We are taxed enough (and maybe even too much) we just are not investing those resources correctly or with priorities that support long term sustainable growth like EDUCATION.

We build overpasses and under passes at exorbitant cost, with tremendous cost overruns due to outright graft and theft, yet the only increase traffic jams and commuting times between 40 and 60 minutes.

This taxation mantra by the PLD is just to try to maintain the Corrupt Lifestyles which their Criminal Political Committee has become accustomed to in the 12 years of economic terror they have waged on the Dominican Masses.

This is the Corrupt Political 1% against the rest of the Dominican 99%!
