Domingo Domingo.- Justice minister Francisco Domínguez on Friday ordered the removal of air conditioners and other privileges in the country's prisons, an announcement top officials make from time to time.

In a missive, Dominguez orders Prisons director Thomas Holguin to halt the privileges to all inmates, including the use of satellite dishes, laptops, among others.

He noted that those who enjoy such privileges are precisely inmates doing time for serious crimes, which have allowed them to amass large fortunes, which he affirms buys not only impunity but also certain benefits that the system can not continue to allow.

"Drug traffickers for example, have many air conditioners and that’s intolerable for us," Dominguez said in a statement.

False. Many inmates that have air conditioners have paid highly for that privilege to prison officials, and now they want to remove them, so they can charge again for the same services at a later date, when things have "cooled down".
Some older and sick inmates will die without special care or relief from the intense heat in the cells. This ban is in no way a stop gap measure, considering the squalid conditions, and many insects of DR prisons. The inmates pay out of their own pockets for this privilege, and some even have their own power plants.
This very political measure to gain public sympathy is cruel and excessive.

If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

Theses are prisons, not hotels.

Generoso,

This time I am not in agreement with your point of view.
Same conditions for all inmates. If a peson is in jail is because he/she decided to be there.

Looking at the picture, seems like some of our prisons have improved significantly.

For some of you that have not had the displeasure to visit or stay in a DR jail, and seen first hand the subhuman conditions, (not like the photo), overcrowding, lack of sanitary facilities, zero hygiene, substandard food, if any at all, lack of ventilation and even windows in cells, and placing contagious disease prisoners in common cells with others. Instead of lowering the standards for DR jails, we should be talking about raising them. The justice minister person leading this action, which is intended for future political purposes, should be ashamed of being complicit to substandard conditions in prisons, violating internationally accords in which the DR is signatory of basic human rights.
No one can compare the conditions of "cake walk" prisons in the USA to the ones in the DR, yet we are much better than in the island prison of Cuba, where they place political prisoners in cages so small that they can not stand up.

I have zero sympathy fro criminals that have special privileages , like laptops , cell phones, HD televisons , are you kidding me , this is suppose to be prison your there because you commited horrible crimes against citizens . You lost all your rights when you decided to commit these acts of crime . prisons in dominican republic are horrible , but at the same time corruption runs so deep that these inmates are bringing in money/ drugs inside the prisons ,you know there getting these perks by no good prison guards.

I guess this is what Saint Danilo meant when he promised during the campaign “To Continue With What Was Going Well!”

He Must Have Gotten the PRISON VOTE!

“Rich prisoners continue to be living the high life”

“Bankers and other rich prisoner’s privileges remain intact”

"The area of the rich", as the Chorus of other inmates called it has seven Sky satellite dishes, two from Claro TV, four solar panels and five water heaters installed in the ceiling of the Modelo de Najayo prison”

Read the rest and see the pictures for yourself at:

Presos ricos siguen dándose la gran vida

Siguen intactos los privilegios de los banqueros y otros presos ricos

“El área de los ricos”, como le llaman a coro los demás internos, cuenta con siete parábolas Sky, dos de Claro TV, cuatro paneles solares y cinco calentadores de agua instalados en el techo del centro
