Santo Domingo.- Former Prisons director Mario Acosta was transferred under tight security to Najayo prison yesterday, indicted on charges of accepting a more than RD$1.0 million bribe from alleged money launderer Pascual Cordero Martinez (El Chino), in exchange for favors.

The former official was escorted out of a Ciudad Nueva Courthouse cell where he was being held since last week, and taken to Najayo, where he’ll spend three months to await trial.

Althoug Santos insists he’s innocent, National District prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso had requested one year in jail to await trial.

In Najayo prison, he can buy a private apartment for $400,000 pesos, out of all the graft moneys that he collected from prisoners. Private security, once there, will cost him $300 pesos per day per guard, so he will probably survive and be out on bail in no time, once his other back slapping buddies make a deal with authorities.
This could be an interesting case to watch over time. My bet is that he is out on bail before the trial date.
One can not imagine many past and present corrupt, going to jail in the DR, because almost everyone has a "compadre" or an acquaintance or relative, that will throw a lifeline and pull you out of incarceration. That is assuming that you have cash, otherwise better grease your behind well.

DR laws are to flexible. If he is foud guilty just shoot the bastard outside the prison and avoid repetition and set up an example for the rest to follow.A bullet only cost $1.00 and don't have to
feed the bastard for the rest of his life providing he gets life.Imagine all the savings to the State?
