Santiago, DR.– Two persons with symptoms similar to cholera died in Santiago, health sources reported as the country is carrying out a campaign against several diseases.

The two patients who died had arrived at the Jose Maria Cabral Hospital with symptoms of severe diarrhea. Julio de los Santos, 66, was from the province of Espaillat, while Oscar Antonio Lora, 64, lived in Santiago.

Since the beginning of the cholera epidemic in Haiti in November 2010, nearly 26,712 Dominicans have been affected by the disease, and 169 deaths have been confirmed, according to statistics from the Health Ministry.

Ok now Health Ministry don't you think it's about time to tell the people the cause and what not to do and what to do to prevent more deaths. Will somebody get this message to los intelectos por favor.

It is very sad that the word “cholera”still exist in the DR. Has anybody ever heard about PM (preventive medicine measures)?. Where in the F****K are the “smart folks” running the Health Ministry?. This diseases is preventable, easy to diagnose/treat. In fact, like most bacterial diseases YOU CAN GET vaccinated against it . Danilo’s health “gurus” advisers need to “step up to the plate” and give him some guidance.

We need Cesar Mella, MD., on the saddle...and I guarantee you that we will fix, that incompetent, inefficient, ill-prepared Dominican medical community. The medical elite simply wants to make $$. These “galenos de patio” had ignored the true, core values of the medical profession. However, unfortunately in the RD everything is driven by your political affiliation.

The government prefers to spend its budget on high-profile, cute and very expensive procedures like the separation of the Boca Chica Siamese twins. Preventative general medicine is boring.

The main problem is with the water. The Government had to make creating a sustainable public water service and leave all the vain edifices alone! There is no reason why Cholera should be taking lives there. But because there is no decent water system in place it continues to thrive. Instead of trying to expand the Metro they need to spend that money and more on Water and then Electricity. It's a shame that so much has been done to give the appearance of a "success" while the people suffer and don't have the basic things they should in this day and time.

Bernard,
How can you have a safe, reticulated, potable water system when the rivers in the catchment areas feeding the dams are used by the feral locals as rubbish-tips as sewers? There is probably not enough chlorine in the country to make it safe, and no-one would drink it anyway. The Metro is not the problem.
Dominicans are.

@roystone, you forgot that ALL Haiti's problems will be fixed by them, with their own money, with no outside help, by next year.......
