Santo Domingo.- The  Environment Ministry on Thursday said it will not issue a permit for the announced  shark fishing tournament along Santo Domingo’s coast south, citing negative impact on wildlife.

Environment minister Bautista Rojas Gomez warned that his agency ensures the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and wouldn’t endorse such activity, noting that there are no studies on the shark population along Dominican Republic’s Caribbean coast.

The official added that Environment Law 64-00 empowers that agency to invoke the precautionary principle for such situations.

Ever here of "catch & release?"

Most fishing tournaments in the civilized world have adopted that policy. Not only does it make the tournament sustainable but it brings much needed exposure to the situation.

It is quite amazing how the shark population has diminished ..In many countries in the southern hemesphere shark was the fish that was eaten the most ,,and Roy Stone can attest to the popularity of flake in Australia ,,but now flake is not even for sale ..so I think the environment ministry has taken the right move

A successful shark hunt would attract the wrong crowd to the area and would give even more bad ideas to dominicans and haitians.
