Santo Domingo.– The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Sapelo Saturday night interdicted 1.3 tons of cocaine off the coast of Bani, in the Dominican southern region, with a wholesale value of more than US$34 million.

While on a routine patrol, a deployed Coast Guard Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft crew detected a suspicious vessel south of Bani. Coast Guard Sector San Juan watchstanders were notified and diverted the Sapelo crew, who was patrolling the area at the time, to interdict the suspect vessel.

The crew of the aircraft observed the suspected smugglers jettisoning suspicious objects overboard as they fled at a high rate of speed after they noticed law enforcement authorities in the area.

This triggered an interagency response that included aircraft from Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATFS) and forces from the Dominican Navy.

After searching throughout the night and the following day, the crew of the Sapelo recovered 43 bales of contraband that had been thrown overboard by the suspects aboard the fleeing vessel. Further inspection and testing of the suspected contraband revealed it to be cocaine.

The reason why drugs flow through DR and Mexico is that everyone has a price and can be bought up to the highest levels.

When you see or hear of these busts, this is all planned and staged to allow twice as much to get through. Just imagine the tons of coke sitting in the DR awaiting transfer. It is enough to start a ski resort in Punta Cana.

We may find out more tomorrow in the press ,,the amount flowing through the DR is absolutle chicken feed cmpared to Mexico .To suggest that the drug lords deliberately let all this cocaine to be confiscated as some sort of diversion ,,is testing credilbility just a smidgeon too far

Psssst! Someone got a word-a-day calendar for Christmas, and I'm guessing that 'the word for today' is "interdict".

@ synapse:

Hey. if they can build one in Dubai, then why not Punta Cana? But then again, do you really want all them pot-head snow boarders in the RD?

Seriously though folks; one must be impressed at the number of busts over the last 18 months. Yet one must wonder what reprisals may come. Hondurans already know as do all in the Caribbean. You have to give it to those who would stand in harm's way - they must surely feel like Sisyphus.

It's all very 'cloak and dagger' when you think about how long this has gone on with no end in sight.

Sounds like someone lost a big shipment.Of course the US coast guard found the boat.It probably left the DR after paying some bribes and was en route to where it was going. That is a large shipment to lose.Someone is going to be angry.

It is a global problem and the US DEA FBI and CIA are the major players. If you believe not you are in denial.

If you have ever visited Puerto Rico you have to wonder how it is that a SMALL island like PR is so totally saturated with drugs?? It is only 100 miles long and 40 miles wide and it is absolutely without question totally saturated with drugs.

The US arranges it so the people will not have any spirit to respond the bastardization of their culture and people.

It is the best way for globalization to happen. Keep the people from realizing the Matrix is now in control and the USA controls the Matrix
