Santo Domingo.- Twenty American dentists were mugged Monday night by two men on a motorcycle near the busy corner of Maximo Gomez and Bolivar avenues.

The foreigners, who are in the country providing free dental consultations, left their hotel around 9pm and when a first group walked near the Gomez, one of the assailants dismounted the motorcycle, gun in hand took what they had, while another group waling on the Bolivar, near the Mormon temple, where the same thugs also mugged them.

"One of them put his gun to my head and told me he would kill us unless we give them our watches, iPad’s, credit cards, money, rings and I told him no, that we have nothing, but there was another boy I didn't see behind the group and began to take a camera in a backpack and stole 3,000 dollars and other belongings," said Ken Dibble, one of the victims.

He said the group shouted when a security guard appeared and went to another street and saw the other group being robbed.

The dentists from Utah University’s G3 Medical Foundation came to the country hosted by National District senator Reinaldo Pared.

Mormons walking the streets of Santo Domingo at 9pm wearing/carrying anything of value?
Easy pickings.
Naive people in the wrong place and wrong time.
Lucky for the bandidos that the dentists weren't from Texas, they'd be dead.

Dread......this stuff happens in every city.
Except in SD?

The reason it is a news story was the pathetic fact that the folks from Utah came here to help.

I feel sorry for the victims, naive as they are. Go after the perps and give them what they deserve.

The truth of the matter is the public is drowning in a cesspool of corruption from all sources, whether the source be peasant, white collar, blue collar, uniform, or card carrying politician. Only when the public says enough by voice and demonstration against this rape of the right to live without fear or harm will there be some light at the end of the tunnel.

Hey, you're the ones that say not to believe everything that's published on DT. Now you're stating that this article is completely accurate.

So in your mind good news about the DR is always inaccurate and bad news about the country is always accurate. In a country that likes to sensationalize and exaggerate the news I rather read it from multiple sources before judging it's accuracy.

There is no justification for robbing someone of their hard earned money.

DR is suffering from a sickness called (Thuggetic Anarquicus Corrupticus).

Rampant thugs, corrupt politicians and anarchy. Thanks to that contageous wussy, LEONEL.

The only solution for this is a medicine named (MANO DURA), an IRON FIST.

This is a matter where the US Dept of State, the embassy, should get involved, by at least issuing some kind of statement regarding this incident. It does not really matter what they say as long as the they say something. My fear is the incident will be swept under the rug (kept out of the press)when no one speaks up. The government does not its black eye to be known to the world.

DT should do a follow up story regarding what authorities are doing.

The Mormons should call the U.S. Embassy here. The Embassy will give them an appointment some time next month. They will then stand in line at the consulate for at least an hour. Herded around by young Dominican kids that say they are controlling the line. Then comes the best they will be within 1-2 hours waiting to see some one. When that some one appears he or she will be another Dominican expert on American law and the workings of America. This person will then inform then that the embassy is not involved with Dominican law, and tell them to go see a Dominican ABAGADO.. Been there done that myself. I'm sure after all this they will not have any more trips planed for the future.

That is pretty factual, to say the least. Had a friend that was railroaded by a sibling, wanting to extract some money from him, under a falsified charge. According to DR-US agreements the US consulate is immediately notified when US citizens are imprisoned, and they call the prison with lighting speed, to inform the prisoners if they need toothbrushes or soap, and (with strange persistent insistence) if they need the name of a Dominican (friendly) lawyer referral, to handle their case. This is all very suspect and grounds for investigation of corrupt kickbacks.

actually, curlando, it was a camera valued at 3000. the guys were set up by people they knew. sadly, there are Dominicans who will befriend vulnerable people in order to victimize them later. secondly, other Dominicans will oftentimes come to the assistance of the victimizers. i had a simple example, just today. i tried to buy a pack of cigarettes, and i gave the lady 100 pesos, and she gave me back 20 pesos. i told her that she had made a mistake, and she immediately informed me that the price of cigarettes had risen. i told here i was aware, but that it had risen from 55 to 60 pesos. immediately, some guy overheard the conversation, and jumped in, insisting i was wrong. you see, i was the foreigner in the equation. he had to help his fellow Dominican to rob me. i asked him if he was a smoker, to which he answered"no". so, i asked him how he is so familiar with the price. to end the standoff, i demanded my money back, and bought it nextdoor for 60 pesos.

the point is that these guys did not stand much of a chance, because the rank and file Dominican would not sell out his fellow Dominican in a matter such as this. had he come to the aid of a foreigner, he would have been a traitor. it is sad, since these people came here to help.
