Dajabon, Dominican Republic.- Hundreds of people on Wednesday protested against the Jesuit priest Regino Martinez and his planned construction of a village (batey) with 600 houses for Haitian immigrants who work in the community Ranchadero, northwestern Guayubín Township.
The protesters shouted insults against the coordinator of the NGO Border Solidarity, an umbrella group of human rights for refugees and immigrants.
Ranchadero residents rejected the batey’s construction on fears that another Haiti would arise from the site, which they affirm would grow day by day and threaten their customs and laws.
Quoted by elcaribe.com.do, the protesters say Border Solidarity plans to build houses with wooden walls and corrugated steel roofs in the Dominican Government land.
Martinez had announced his transfer to that community starting in March, where the Jesuits allegedly sent him to represent those foreigners.

I keep telling you guys that if you decide to bring Trujillo back, please run him through a car wash because none of us will be able to handle the stench. You can buff wax his little forehead for $3.00 more. A couple of dabs of old spice behind the ears will help also. Forget the old spice just hang two green pine 'pine tree' air fresheners on him; one for each ear.
The Jesuits are great people. They fight for minority's rights throughout the world. Jamaicans and Dominicans have been the beneficiaries of their efforts and struggle for human dignity; throughout the world. What do you think, the white man just woke up one day and said "I will start treating these little black, brown, and yellow people like they are my equals?" This resulted from great sacrifice and struggle. What campaign in history did the DR commence to improve minority rights and race relations for people of color, like themselves? Answer: It rhymes with 'hero'.

Be a part of something wonderful for a change. Forget about the US, Canada, and Europe. All Carib countries should get behind one common effort and help Haiti. A working Haiti will improve things for all of us, ESPECIALLY dominicans because they will not have to carry the burden of so many of her poor.
Wake up and realize, Haitians are breeding with Dominicans. Dominicans and Haitians find great accomplishment in producing multiple multiple off-spring. Imagine, Jamaica has less than 1/3 the population of either of your countries. One day, SOON, you won't know who is who because the mix will be so homogeneous.

That is an Oxymoron.
If the Jesuits are such great people, why are they not rebuilding Haiti? that is where houses need to be built for the Haitians people.
And stop your dreaming, it isn't a matter of colors; The caribean Countries haven't all the resources needed to put Haiti back. Perhaps your beloved Jamaica (?)

I do think that Haiti is too large a problem for one, two, or three Caribbean countries but not for all of us. We have wonderful success stories here in the caribbean and tremendous know-how! Barbados, Trinidad, Antigua, etc. Why not tap into these resources? Banking is huge! Haiti is a growing market.... My doctor friend who lives in Haiti (US educated) started a bleach production plant in Haiti (a small operation) and now makes more money from this business than his practice. His brother has become wealthy renting suv's with a driver and security. US$300.00/day per rental. If Haiti imports 55% of all its consumables. Imagine producing and supplying 1% of this market in Haiti for Haitian consumption.

People here, both foreigners and even some native turncoats, tend to forget that the largest phase of construction and agrarian works (as in, Trujillo's dictatorship and Balaguer's twenty two years) was carried out using native Dominican labor, and that the only way one ever saw an Haitian during those eras was if one went to the bateys surrounding the sugar mills owned by the state and some private families (Vicini, Fanjul, etc.), or if one went to the little Haiti sector here in the capital city. The bottomline in all this being that the extensive employment of this labor in the other sectors of the economy has been largely a recent phenomenom (2000's onwards).

A lot of great posts here, although some not so good but most made valid arguments. I do want to stress, we can not directly hold the Haitian people responsible for their misery and wanting to cross the border for relief. They are just victims of higher forces at work. We don't have to go into details to explain who, what and why. We know the answers as to the reasons Haiti ended up the way it is. The massive influx of desitute Haitians is a consequence of basically two factors, dire economic conditions and incentives to live and work in the DR as a quick fix to their desperation. You can't blame them for that. Any normal human would do the same thing. However, two wrongs don't make a right, and neither is using Trujillo like methodology to solve the undocumented problem. It will back fire, just as it did for Trujillo. We lost territory to Haiti and had to pay restitution. Therefore, we must continue to search for a middle ground solution, but this burden can't be left solely on the DR

Chilli there are a lot of flaws in your argument. Pto Rico is a US territory and the DR is not. There is little to no incentives for Pto Ricans to work. They don't have to. Remember they get food stamps, welfare, Social Security and disability payments. Most Pto Ricans have back problems or other health issues and their reputation as industrious individuals is lacking. While drug consumption is minimal in the DR the native Ricans are notorious for heavy drug use followed by one of the highest crime rates in the region way before Dominicans arrived

This priest seems like quite the pest. He wants to build housing on Dominican government land for illegals. Que boludo as the Argentinians would say. This dude needs to be declared personna non gratta and deported to Haiti proper. Let him build houses in Haiti as Rokete mentioned.
Chili another reason why your comparison of Haiti-DR with DR-PR is flawed is the simple numbers involved. I would venture to say that DR population in PR is probably 10% of Haitian population in DR. What is it about this masssive illegal migration that you unionist cannot understand? The numbers involved are not conducive to good neighborly relations. What is beingf perpetrated in DR by unionist and the illegals would not be tolerated by any other sovereign nation.
We cannot be the major outlet for Haiti's population control failures. Chili is correct, if the rest of the Caribean family helps Haiti would be better able to rebuild.
