Santo Domingo.- Former president Hipolito Mejia, who in the recent past had locked horns with cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez, revealed Wednesday that he asked the Catholic Church’s mediation to strike a pact that reaches beyond the opposition party’s (PRD) current standoff.

"I had already spoken to monsignor Agripino Nunez Collado and a few days ago we sent a letter to cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez," the former chief executive said, noting that there’s no possibility he would meet with PRD president Miguel Vargas.

"I do not want to talk to him. For what? I tried to talk with him twenty times for him to rejoin and what he did was to sell himself," he said.

Mejia fielded reporters’ questions prior to heading a graduation of the José Francisco Peña Gomez Institute, held at the Santo Domingo Catholic University (UCSD).

gmiller261,
There is not even a pretense of separation of church and state in the Duminincan Republic. Check out the Concordat of 1954 for their marriage vows.

The Hipoloco is getting desperate to appeal to the catholic church, who does not like him one bit.
What this latest move indicates is frustration, and possibly forecasting a long and tedious trench war, with the main casualty being the PRD itself, while the PLD cronies celebrate with delight and toast this never ending internecine struggle.

As bad as Vargas is, we still owe him thanks.

If he didn't sell out to LF our president today would be Mejia and that would have been disaster. C

This jerk is going to try any and every venue, except the correct one, to plead his case. He is not needed or wanted, he should live with it and go back to farming.

I see that the lesser of two evils is finally being accepted around some corners. Now let's await those "salutary" notes from Josean.

Would he really prefer Mejias to Medina?

Those were THE ONLY TWO POSSIBILITIES, after all. :)
