Santo Domingo.- The Armed Forces Minister yesterday warned that politicians’ lists or business cards with recommendations to promote members of the military will not be accepted, referring to February 27, the traditional date when the military are promoted in ranks.

Sigfrido Pared revealed that during his first tenure as Minister (2004-2006) he rejected recommendations for promotions, and also ordered five days of arrest of those who sought to benefit from political connections.

The official said this time will be no different, for which any military who doesn’t meet the rank’s requirement will have trouble attaining it.

Pared, interviewed by listin.com.do accompanied by the chiefs of Staff of the three branches, said one of his dreams is to achieve the military’s institutionalization.  "You go to a Central American country and you will not see a captain who doesn’t know a military unit. A captain must meet the rigor to be captain. Then that’s the part which we have to work on."

Just blowing hot air. The bad habits of the DR military have been there for eons, and in order to change them, the minister will have to start from zero, including himself.

Of course the fact he has a Brother (some say sister) who is President of the Senate and another who is a shoe shine boy for Saint Danilo gives him no personal advantages!

Generals command armies, Colonels command regiments Lieutenant Colonels Command Battalions Captains Command Companies and Lieutenants command platoons. With the size of the military they should have no more than 4 Generals each in command of a branch of service. Instead they have 160 in command of what ? Create trust with the people and start weeding out those who are corrupt or have done nothing for the pay they receive

Josean ,,you must not be a selective quoter ,,it is worse than plagiarism ..I have always said that LF failed badly in the areas of dealing with law and order and corruption but he gets top marks for all the capital works programmes, for the diversion of the economy and for keeping the DR growing when most of the world was in economic chaos

If members of the military were only promoted on merit, there would be no officers in the Duminican armed forces. The reverse seems to be the case, given the number of dog-washers with high rank.

Am in full agreement with you ,but you left out (brigades) commanded by a (brig.gen ) one star.
So, the DR Army should not have any more than 6 brig gen since all they have is 6 bigades.They
all should come out of an approved military academy as 2nd ltnts and work their rank according
to merits. The politicians should not appt brig gen and bellow since it is the high commands' responsability.In this case he S.PARED is correct .
