Santo Domingo.-  Retired general Pedro Julio Goico Guerrero (Pepe Goico) on Thursday filed charges of slander before the Supreme Court against opposition PRD party deputy Geovanny Tejada, and three media outlets.

Goico accuses Tejada of violating the Freedom of Expression Law and other legislation, by using libelous statements against him in TV programs of the RNN Network, hosted by Hector Herrera Cabral.

He said Tejada told some media that on ex president Hipolito Mejia’s instructions, he had leaked the plea bargaining agreement between money laundering convict Sobeida Felix and the National District Office of the Prosecutor. "That to execute his plan, Hipolito Mejía used as his chief emissary, the former head of his security detail, ex coronel Pedro Julio Goico (Pepe) to send the document to the newspaper."

"In his appearance at the TV channel, the accused Geovanny Tejada said Hipolito and his collaborator’s had unleashed a smear and lowly campaign against the president of the PRD, which is unprecedented  in that political organization’s history," Goico said.

Pepe should be careful for what he wishes for. Should a slander trial go forward the skeletons in his closet may be exposed.

I think this filing is more of a macho posturing on his part than anything else. Expect somewhere sometime down the road the filing will become lost in the fog of judical review.

I imagine this man has weighed up all that is entailed in proceeding with such a case and every one should have the right to protect his honour and to be innocent until proved guilty ...I give him full marks though I know nothing of him.

FYI: Pepe Goico should be the poster child for unmilitary like behavior. While he was in uniform as an officer, with no military academic background, (other than being an "attack dog" and bodyguard of Hipoloco Mejia, and with close access to the boss) he was known as "el arbirtrario", for his frequent bursts of anger and daily bullying of all around him, including the press corps.
In any other army in the world, after completing basic training, maybe Pepe would have risen to the rank of a gunny sergeant at the most, but in DR he was promoted and pensioned as a general.
Pepe's misdeeds are legendary, and fodder for Dominican jokes and mockery, including the famous "pepe card", unlimited BANINTER credit card that Pepe used, to buy himself a dozen gold rolexes, and a small helicopter, amongst other "goodies".
