Santo Domingo.- Santiago archbishop Ramon Benito de la Rosa y Carpio said Thursday that the Catholic Church is willing to mediate in the crisis of the Dominican Republic’s opposition party (PRD), "if the parties so request it."

When reporters in the National Palace asked about former president Hipolito Mejia’s proposal for the Catholic Church to mediate in the crisis, the prelate warned that turmoil within political parties imperil Dominican democracy.

De la Rosa noted that Trujillo's tyranny arose from crises in political parties, the same as the current disorder. "Without the parties democracy weakens and anything can happen. We remember what happened to this country in the early 20th century, we cannot forget why the Trujillo dictatorship arose, because there was a big mess in the country when the parties were disorganized and we need to organize our parties strongly."

The Catholic Archbishop talking about "Trujillo's tyranny" - that's a laugh!

The Catholic Church, (including Hitler's Pope Pius XII), and Trujillo were in bed together and their agreement, the Concordat is still in force in the Duminican Republic.

Just for the record, I do not hate Duminicans, or any other nationality or race for that matter.

Roystone i am Dominican and completely agree with everything you are saying. The church is the most corrupt party of them all so it does seem appropriate for the head of the gang of thieves to mediate. Kind of like the capo de tuti capo of the italian mafia cosa nostra. I also apologize for my fellow dominicans that can't handle the truth when it's set in front of them and have been indoctrinated in the corrupt infestation which is the present state of dominican society.

"can't handle the truth when it's set in front of them" zonyk157,
Yes, especially if coming from a foreigner.

Your profile says you are in the United States. There seem to be two distinct breeds of Dominicans - like the Eloi an Morlocks in "The Time Machine" - those who have lived outside the country, and those who haven't.

It's just like everywhere else Roystone, if you have never experienced anything else than you really have nothing to compare it to. Also, sometimes it takes someone from the outside looking in to point out your flaws. When something has been done the same way for a long time it becomes the norm, no matter how bad it is. Dominican corruption falls under that criteria. It is now woven into the fabric of society. You combine that with lack of education, work or hope and you have a perfect formula for a dysfunctional system.

Roystone, as far as the reference to the eloi and morlocks.... I don't know if it was meant as an insult but you seem to come across as a gentleman so i'll just assume it is a misunderstanding on my part. The reference to that part of his book doesn't seem very...flattering. Something i've come across my travels is that you not only find alot of ignorance but also alot of arrogance.
